Register to vote for silenced millions," says MP Majome - jingoism at its nonsensical worst N Garikai

I have heard it said that MDC leaders are corrupt and incompetent, like many Zimbabweans, I have, until now, brushed it aside just as an inconvenience. “Aren’t all!” I would say. It is only now that it has dawned on me that being corrupt and incompetent when the consequences of your blundering will affect yourselves and a handful of others is one thing when you are public figure and your blunders affect millions of others, it is a totally different kettle of fish.

Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends’ blundering incompetence and greed is something we have dismissed lightly in the past and have paid dearly for it. We must step up our game and challenge everything they do.

MDC-T MP for Harare West, Hon. Jessie Fungayi Majome complained of intimidation and harassment of people registering to vote following her visit to Mount Darwin, Dotito and Pfura. She does not deny this is a serious problem as the title of her article in Zimeye clearly states; REGISTER TO VOTE – DO IT FOR THE MILLIONS SILENCED BY INTIMIDATION. It is what she is doing to do about it that shows her for the utterly useless, corrupt and incompetent MP she is.

“I was encouraged to see young people eager for political change, proving that not all youths are fooled by the waving of trinkets and crumbs at ZANU PF ‘youth interface’ rallies,” she wrote.

“I will be forwarding to ZEC complaints about the voter registration intimidation. I also hope to help the survivors of political violence in 2008 get justice.

“Let’s register to vote, for our own sake and for the silenced millions.”

MP Majome, unreformed ZEC is but a department in Zanu PF and we all know that the regime’s principle objective is to deliver a landslide victory for the party. ZEC knows that there Zanu PF operative who are intimidating people, indeed ZEC officials themselves are doing their bit to frustrate and stop suspected opposition supporters from registering; what MP Majome picked up during a day visit is but the tip of the iceberg.

What is shocking here is that MP Majome is herself aware of the millions of Zimbabweans, “silenced millions”, who, for no fault of their own, have been denied the vote and will be denied the vote again next year. What is totally unacceptable is that MP Majome and her follow MDC leaders and the rest in the opposition camp have all conspired to contest the flawed and illegal elections that denies millions of ordinary Zimbabweans their right to free, fair and credible vote.

Morgan Tsvangirai and his fellow MDC leaders had the opportunity to implement the democratic reforms during the GNU which would have stopped Zanu PF rigging the vote and giving the “silenced millions” their voice. They had five years to implement the reforms but failed to get even one reform implemented because they sold-out. President Mugabe bribed them with the trappings of high office, a former white-owned farm for Welshman Ncube, a $4 million mansion for Tsvangirai, etc. and the MDC leaders threw reforms out of the window.

MP Majome, like everyone else in MDC, must have known that SADC leaders had advised MDC not to contest the July 2013 elections without implementing the democratic reforms first because Zanu PF will rig the vote. She like everyone else ignored the advice and contested the flawed elections because greed had clouded their thinking; they were after whatever gravy train seats Zanu PF throw their way regardless how many millions of Zimbabweans were denied a meaningful vote!

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” David Coltart, later admitted in his book, The Struggle Continues, 50 Years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

History will know that David Coltart and his MDC friends formed the MDC Alliance in 2017 and went on to contest the equally flawed and illegal 2018 election. It was not “the failure to agree a coalition” that had stopped them boycotting the July 2013 election, stopped them implementing even one reform in five years of the GNU and stopped them boycotting the flawed 2018 elections. It was greed that did all that!

Zanu PF understands the greed of those in the opposition and is exploiting it to the full by offering a few gravy train seats. As long as there is a chance of winning a few gravy train seats there will be many opposition candidates who will contest the elections regardless of how many millions of ordinary Zimbabweans are harassed, beaten and raped and how many thousands are murdered. Zanu PF needs people like MP Majome to contest the flawed and illegal elections and to go out there and encourage as many ordinary Zimbabweans to participate to give the process some measure of credibility. The regime cannot afford to have the elections condemned as a sham and be forced into yet another GNU or worse!

What the people of Zimbabwe must wake up to is the political reality that an electoral process that accepts “silenced millions” as fait accompli is not what the nation wants and therefore not what any thinking Zimbabwean would want to endorse by registering to vote, attending party rallies etc. As long as the people participate in these flawed and illegal elections then there is no pressure of MDC, ZEC much less Zanu PF itself to implement the reforms to give back the “silenced millions” their democratic voice!

“Let’s register to vote, for our own sake and for the silenced millions!” said MP Majome. That is just a piece of nonsensical jingoism!

Many of the people braving the Zanu PF thugs’ intimidation and jumping through many hurdles ZEC has erected to stop people registering as voters are themselves the silenced millions. Many will never register and of those who do register, many will be denied the vote one way or the other. What these people are failing to appreciate is that all their frantic efforts to register, etc. is exactly what the regime want them to do. All their effort will not change the result but only help to give the process credibility. People like MP Majome are encouraging the povo to dig their own political grave, for their own selfish greed.

Where is the blitz? MDC betrayed the nation by failing to implement the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. Many people have lost trust in the whole electoral process they can see is flawed but instead of the opposition acknowledging this and do something about it they bury their heads in the sand and pretend everything is fine. Whatever enthusiasm the people had about registering to vote it has quickly fizzled out as soon as they realised that Zanu PF was up to its usual dirty tricks. Same s***t different year!

MDC has lost political credibility and the party has blundered from one disaster into the next. Zanu PF has no choice but to rig the elections and MDC can pretend all the like that nothing is happening the people Zimbabwe and the world can see what is happening. SADC leaders will be hard pushed to accept these elections as anything else other than what they are - a sham.

Poor Chamisa, he does not have the money to have the Zanu PF hired crowds! Next time take a photo of those queuing at the bank!

f anyone in the MDC had any idea about what the democratic changes the nation required before the party joined Zanu PF in the GNU, then they must have forgotten the changes soon thereafter. Mugabe has turned Zanu PF into a party of yes-men who are always there to do his bid and call. Even individuals like Walter Kamba and Bernard Chidzero who were their own man before Mugabe cast his bewitching spell on them all succumbed to the tyrant’s whims and make complete asses of themselves. Kamba was the Chairman of the Election Commission for years and his presence gave the commission a certain gravitas although it was a toothless dog which is exactly what the tyrant wanted. By the time Kamba left the commission his name was mud!

Mugabe used Bernard Chidzero, as the country’s minister of finance, to give respectability to his scientific socialism experiment – voodoo economic whose main thread was reckless spending. Chidzero was then used negotiate economic reform programme with the WB, IMF, etc. which allowed the tyrant to borrow even more dragging the nation deeper and deeper into debt and economic trouble. By the time Chidzero left government, his name too was mud.

Mugabe found bribing Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends child’s play, he allowed them to have a taste of the gravy train lifestyle and they were queuing to lick his hand like puppies in gratitude. Only an MDC politicians would no see the sheer stupidity of a few people “voting for the silenced millions”!

We are now stuck with not only Mugabe and his subservient concubines (vakadzi vaMugabe, as Margaret Dongo aptly named them,) but Morgan Tsvangirai and his corrupt and incompetent MDC friends. The promise of winning the few gravity train seats will the enough to attract all manner of opposition deadwood to contest the country’s flawed and illegal elections. Sadly, there are many Zimbabweans out there desperate for change they are queuing to play whatever part they are assigned not aware they are undermining the public cause of demanding the reforms before elections.

MPs and Senators have gone on strike to press demands for their seating allowances to be paid.

Legislators across the political divide have threatened to sink the 2018 National Budget if they don’t get a five-fold increase in their allowances.

These men and women’s greed knows no bounds; the country is in a serious economic mess, they are supposed to solve the country’s problems but they are making a bad situation worse. So why the nation would want to reward them with a five-fold allowance increase when all they have ever done is drag the nation deeper and deeper into this hell-on-earth beggars belief!

The real tragedy is that many people in Kenya saw this matter as a Kenyatta vs Odinga or a party-political issue when it was much, much more than that, this is a national issue. Allowing these elections to go ahead without the democratic reforms will mean those who did not want the reforms implemented to guarantee free, fair and credible elections have won the day.

The one thing we can be certain of is that President Uhuru Kenyatta will do is promote those who have helped him resist the reforms. He has already said he would “deal” with the judges who nullified the August result, he will deal with them alright.
Kenya has been ruled by a de facto one-party, KANU, dictatorship since the country gained its independence in 1963 until the GNU of 2007 to 2012. Raila Odinga, who was the Prime Minister in the GNU implemented a raft of democratic reforms designed to end KANU’s tyrannical powers and control over state institutions freeing them to carry out their statutory duties.

But, as we can see, dictatorship that have been well established are hard to uproot and that is why there were voting irregularities again in August. By allowing the elections to go ahead with no reforms, Kenya is going back to the de facto one-party dictatorship days again.

Speaking at a dialogue meeting facilitated by Community Tolerance Reconciliation and Development (COTRAD) at Chenhara in Mwenezi last week, the concerned villagers said the Zanu PF Councilor and ruling party officials threatened to eliminate members of opposition parties ahead of the 2018 elections.
Forcing a entrench dictatorship like Zanu PF that is determined to stay in power at all cost to abandon its undemocratic practices and hold free, fair and credible elections is going to be a serious challenge for us all. The challenge becomes mission impossible if those supposedly fighting for free and fair elections are pulling in opposite directions.
We can force Zanu PF to end its culture of political violence and vote rigging by demanding the implementation of the democratic reforms agreed in the 2008 Global Political Agreement. Those who believe they can achieve the same by going around the country holding these COTRAD meeting are misleading the nation, especially those in the rural areas.
There have been countless of such COTRAD meetings and yet the problem has not gone away and as the political temperature has started to rise as we approach elections the cases of human rights violations have started to go up. There is no nation in the whole human history that has transformed a ruthless dictatorship by appeasement.
Those facilitating these COTRAD meetings are not fighting to end the Zanu PF dictatorship but are instead seeking to extend its rule by making a big song and danger about ending it whilst undermining the practical initiatives to end it.
"COTRAD peace committee members in Mwenezi district are deeply worried about intimidation and threats of political violence soon after the commencement of the Biometric Mobile Voter Registration on 10 October 2017. COTRAD therefore calls on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to enforce the electoral code of conduct to combat politically motivated violence," said the report.
This is utterly, utterly hopeless! The people of Zimbabwe have awaited for the last 37 years for the country's first ever free, fair and credible elections and, with this lot, the nation will wait in vain!

Without implementing the democratic reforms Zanu PF will rig the elections; if the opposition has been told this once they have been told a thousand times.

“And after that (June 2013) SADC Summit, Morgan Tsvangirai, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube, all of them were called to a separate meeting by the Heads of State of SADC in the absence of Mugabe, that same evening,” Dr Ibbo Mandaza told Violet Gonda. “And they were told; I was sitting there outside the room with Mac Maharaj; they were told ‘if you go into elections next month, you are going to lose; the elections are done’.”

Because of greed, Tsvangirai and company ignored the warning; contested the July 2013 elections and lost. They are once again ignoring the warning not to contest flawed 2018 elections.

The way this voter registration was delayed until less than a year before voting day and now every obstacle is being place in the path of the suspected none Zanu PF supporters to make it near impossible for them to register is clear evidence the regime is already rigging the vote.

After 37 years, there really is no excuse for contesting elections one can see are flawed and are being rigged!

The two war veteran groups belonging to the G40 and Lacoste factions threaten each other as the factional war hots up.

These rogue war veterans have learned nothing from their stupidity of imposing the Mugabe dictatorship.
