"Zimbabwe is stable and prosperous!" is ED's interminable gabble - reality is emerging out of the web of lies N Garikai

“A lie told once remains a lie, but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth,” said Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler’s minister of propaganda.

Goebbels has had many disciples who have subscribed to ethos that repeating a lie a thousand time will turn it into a historic fact and truth; in Zanu PF it not just a few individuals but the whole regime. For the first two decades after independence Robert Mugabe and his minister talked of “Gutsva ruzhinji!” (Mass prosperity!) and would not allow the reality of growing poverty get in the way.

In the last two decades, with unemployment at 80% plus, basic services such as education and health all but collapsed, millions of ordinary Zimbabweans living in abject poverty, etc. the regime changed tac. It could not sustain its mass prosperity mantra in the face of growing mass poverty.

Zanu PF did not acknowledge gross mismanagement and rampant corruption as the root causes of the economic meltdown which are themselves a consequences of incompetent and corrupt Zanu PF leadership. The regime weaved a new lie; it blamed “the British imperialists and their western allies and their illegal sanctions” for all Zimbabwe’s ill!

As the country’s economic situation got worse and worse the people have become more and more restless, desperate for democratic change and economic recovery. Zanu PF has responded by adopting more and more tyrannical measures including blatant cheating and the use of wanton violence to retain power at all cost.

Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown born out of the mass prosperity mirage has not spare the Zanu PF ruling elite. Many Zanu PF grandees like the last Nathan Shamuyarira, Mugabe’s minister of propaganda for donkey years, died a pauper. Mugabe, in typical George Orwell Animal farm cynicism, painted Shamunyarira’s house the day he died – to hide the decades on rot and decay, a reflection of sorry state of those living there. As for the lesser mortals like the war veterans most of them number amongst the ¾ living on US$1.00 or less a day.

Zanu PF has been torn apart by the dog-eat-dog in fighting that has ranged on none-stop for the last five years. Zanu PF members are not just fighting for political power, they are fighting for economic survival because only those wielding power have access to the ever-shrinking national cake. Zanu PF’s dog-eat-dog fight is fuelled by the fear of poverty!

Without doubt Joseph Goebbels’ biggest lie was; “Germany is winning the war!” Zanu PF’s greatest lie has to be: “Zanu PF will deliver mass prosperity!”

When President Mnangagwa strolled onto the political stage with his broad smile and colourful scarf eight months ago he was cocky and cocksure he was going to finally deliver the mass prosperity the nation has been waiting for. His “Zimbabwe is open for business!” has failed to attract the flood of foreign investors he was cocksure would follow. This was just another Zanu PF lie, Zimbabwe is still an unstable pariah state ruled by thugs; investors do not do business with thugs.

“Is this country stable when you have an attempt of the life of the President?” asked BBC's Fergal Keane. He was referring to last Saturday’s bomb blast; he should have also included the military coup of last November, in which President Mnangagwa, by his own admission, played a key role.

By condoning, with their deafening silence, last November’s military coup the international community have not done Zimbabwe any favours. The world condoned the coup because they were relieved to finally see the vote rigging tyrant removed. By failing to fulfil his promise to hold free and fair elections President Mnangagwa has, per se, confirmed himself to be just another vote rigging tyrant. If the world accepted the removal of Mugabe with a coup they will also accept the removal of Mnangagwa with a bomb or some such violent means.

How can a country whose next change of president or government can only be through a coup, a bomb or some such undemocratic way be stable!

“Let me assure you that in the region Zimbabwe is the most stable nation!” replied President Mnangagwa. The web of Zanu PF lies knows no limit!

Even with the Germans being routed at all the fronts and German’s archenemy Joseph Stalin’s Red Army inside Berlin’s the city gates and the noose pulling tight, Goebbels continued his interminable gabble, “Germany is winning the war!”

Mnangagwa’s interminable gabble will be “Zimbabwe is stable and prosperous!” even as the nation sinks deeper and deeper into the abyss!

It does not matter how complex the web of lies may become or how many times the lie is repeated; sooner or later the truth, the reality, will always emerge. “Rene manyanga, hariputirwi!” as one would say in Shona.

When reality, denied for so long, finally emerge; it can be unbearable.

Adolf Hitler committed suicide on 30 April 1945. In accordance with Hitler's will, Goebbels succeeded him as Chancellor of Germany; he served one day in this post. The following day, Goebbels and his wife committed suicide, after poisoning their six children with cyanide.

Robert Gabriel Mugabe was booted out of office by his own henchmen after 37 years of corrupt and tyrannical rule. The tyrant’s chief enforcer, Emerson Mnangagwa, with the support of a gaggle of other thugs took over. Mnangagwa was nearly killed in bomb blast after less than 37 weeks in power! He can witter all he wants about Zimbabwe being stable, we all know that it is not. There will be another coup or bomb of that we can be certain, it is just a matter of when.

In Bindura Cde Matemadanda criticises cde Rugenje calling him a good for nothing cadre. This is a sign of a man powered by a vendetta. ZANU PF is bigger than an individual. Comrade Matemadanda must disembark from his high horse and come to the ground of reality.

I do agree that Matemadanda, like many other rogue war veterans who have backed Zanu PF's no-regime-change agenda, have been totally misguided in putting the party above the nation. Your criticizing Matemadanda for not putting the party above the individual is nonsensical, to say the least. If individual were not bigger than the party then party would have free, fair and credible elections.

If the individual was not bigger than the nation, then Zimbabwe would not be in this mess with the ruling elite riding roughshod of the individual freedoms and human rights.

The ruling elite are good at demanding that povo must put the nation before the party, the party before the individual when it suits their selfish interest; when it is their selfish interest at stake, they disregard the rule.

Zanu PF has often used Matemadanda, Rugeje and many others to intimidate, rape, beat and even murder innocent civilians to impose this de facto one-party dictatorship in the hope Zanu PF will reward them with jobs, looted wealth, power, etc. The party has done no such thing, many of these rogue war veterans and party thugs are among the ¾ of the population living on US$1.00 a day. War veterans seized the white owned farms but only to be booted off the farms by the Zanu PF chefs - served the idiots right.

Zimbabwe is not going to emerge out of this political and economic hell until we end this foolish notion by the likes of Matemadanda and you, Dr Mavaza, that there are some Zimbabweans who are stockholder, they have the veto, whilst the rest are stakeholders, they have the vote!

It is not just Matemadanda who must get off his high horse you too Mavaza, President Mnangagwa and the rest of his junta must too get off their high horses. We want free, fair and credible elections where everyone a single vote and no one has the veto! Only a village idiot like you would consider this charade, free and fair elections!

Everyone with half a brain now knows that these elections are not going to be free, fair and credible. SADC leaders and many other have said again and again: Do not participate in these elections without first implementing the reforms. You, Mr Tendai Biti and your MDC friends have said "No reform, no elections!" but anyone who is anyone knew you are only paying lip-service to reforms.

You had five years during the GNU to implement the reforms but failed to get even one reform implemented. When you were advised not to take part in the elections with no reform, you refused to listen.

"The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn't now do the obvious - withdraw from the (2013) elections," admitted David Coltart in his recent book.

"The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility."

You have decided to take part in these flawed and illegal elections because you are after the few gravy train seats Zanu PF offers as a bait.

"Despite the mounting danger, my colleagues and I in the MDC Alliance will continue raising the alarm while forging ahead with our positive reform agenda. We will continue to believe that Zimbabwe can have a brighter future, based on respect for human rights, the dignity of all people and the principles of freedom and justice. We will continue to stand with brave civil society activists who want both peace and accountability. Our beleaguered nation deserves no less," you say.

This is your feeble excuse for participating in these elections even when you knew doing so will only give Zanu PF the smoke screen cover to rig the elections and drag the nation deeper and deeper into the abyss. Zimbabwe is in this mess because you and your fellow MDC friends have sold-out in the past and are doing so now; please spare us the gratuitous platitudes and feeble excuses, we know you are selling out of greed.

@ David Ndlovu

By agreeing to take part in these flawed elections with no free public media, no clean voters' roll, Zanu PF allowed to loot billions of dollars to bankroll its political activities people are making it easy for Zanu PF to rig these elections and get away with it. SADC leaders, as some of the judges of the Zimbabwe elections, have made their position very clear: Do not take part in the elections without first implementing the reform.

"If you go ahead in next month's elections, you will lose; the elections are done!" they told Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends in 2013.

No one in their right mind would take part in an election process that is already "DONE" or expect anyone else to. So SADC leaders' advise is logical and goes without saying common-sense.

Having been warned the "elections are done" and yet they still wanted to take part it is assumed the participant has a winning rigged elections trump card up their sleeve. If the trump card should prove to be utterly useless the player cannot, however, expect any sympathy for being cheated since they accepted that risk.

MDC leaders do not mind that the elections are rigged as long as they get the few gravy train seats Zanu PF offers as bait. The real losers here are the ordinary Zimbabweans who gain nothing from the rigged 2013 elections and are set to do the same again this year.

For the ordinary Zimbabweans, by participating in the flawed elections they are giving the process credibility and forfeiting the chance to have the reforms implemented!

The parallel market cost of the US dollar to bond notes has risen to 142 percent from about 130 percent in just under a month while the electronic transfer rate on platforms such as Zipit, RTGS and mobile money transfers has soared to 170 percent (US$100 fetches $142 bond notes or $170 in electronic transfers) - over the same period.

We are back to the bad old days where the rich and well connected and making a killing at the expense of the ordinary citizen. Whilst only the former can get foreign currency from the bank at the official exchange rate of one is to one they then sell the foreign currency in the black market making a staggering 42 to 70% mark-up.

The corollary is equally true a naïve investor will deposit his/her foreign currency and paid in bond notes at the official exchange rate of one is to one. When He/she spends the bond note in the real world, they will quickly discover got it is only worth 70% to 59% of what they told it was worth. Welcome to Zimbabwe green horn!

"Zimbabwe is open for business!" has just turned belly up! Foreign investors are a shrewd lot, they will not coming to Zimbabwe to be fleeced!

MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa reportedly told party supporters at a rally recently that elections would not be perceived as free and fair if he was not declared the winner in the July 30 elections.

It is foolish remarks like these that force people to dismiss MDC as a party of village idiots. It is on the basis of the amassed evidence of failure to have free public media, no clean and verified voters' roll, etc. that the decision to condemn the elections or otherwise will be made regardless of the result.

In the 2013 elections MDC candidate like Tendai Biti kicked a dust storm when they realised how Zanu PF was bussing its supporters from one polling station to the next casting multiple votes. When the results came out and he realised that he had won in his constituency he was as quite as a mouse! Many MDC leaders lost the election, but the party's challenge of results lost all credibility when those who won did not want to be involved.

Zanu PF is rigging the elections but has been smart enough to make sure the opposition always win a few gravy train seats to entice them to participate in the flawed elections no matter what!

Following the Bukawayo bomb attack, President Emmerson Mnangagwa was 2days ago questioned on the criteria his administration used to fly out Environment Minister Oppah Muchinguri and Vice President Kembo Mohadi for treatment to South Africa while leaving 47 other victims at Mpilo hospital.

We are all equal but some are more equal than others!
