Zimbabwe is in this economic mess and political paralysis (both the ruling party and the opposition are corrupt, incompetent and clearly have no clue how to get the nation out of the mess and paralysis, all they care about is political power).
Sadly, for the country the ordinary people themselves don’t even know their left from right hand as regards what is going on. They look up to the country’s civic organisation for guidance only to get confusion, at best, otherwise poison.
"We urge the Second Republic to enact electoral reforms and reinstate by-elections to ensure a return to participatory democracy and that citizens are equally represented in council and Parliament," said the Election Resource Centre (ERC).
"Despite promising to preside over a democratic government that respects the Constitution, rule of law, and tolerance, it is regrettable that four years after these utterances by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and 41 years after independence, Zimbabweans are underrepresented in Parliament and local government, with rampant human rights violations that were tenets of colonial rule under Ian Smith.”
Organisations like ERC are a waste of space and time and the nation would be better off if they never existed at all!
In the 41 years of Zimbabwe’s independence, the country has never ever hold free, fair and credible elections. In the 1980 elections, Zanu PF bolded stated that the bush war would continue if the party lost the elections. Of course, the people voted to end the bush war.
After the 1980 elections, there were some wooly mammoth minded individuals who tried to down play Zanu PF threat, dismissing it as political banter. The fog in their heads clearly soon enough when Robert Mugabe launched the 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi massacre that force the late Dr Joshua Nkomo to sign the December 1987 Zanu PF and PF Zapu Unity Accord and clear the way for the imposition of the de facto one-party dictatorship.
Zanu PF has ruled Zimbabwe all these last 41 years, except for the five years of the 2008 to 2013 GNU when it shared power with MDC, precisely because the party has enjoyed carte blanche powers to rig elections. The 2008 elections have become the watershed elections in that Zanu PF blatantly cheated the March vote and used wanton violence to win the run-off that followed.
The whole international community, including SADC and the AU who had always turned a blind eye to Zanu PF rigged elections in the past, condemned the 2008 elections are a farce. SADC leaders forced Robert Mugabe to agree to the implementation of a raft of democratic reforms designed to restore the individual freedoms and rights and stop a repeat of the 2008 rigged elections.
The task of implementing the democratic reforms during the GNU was left to Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends. Sadly, they turned out to be corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent; they failed to implement even one token reform in five years. Not even one!
To be fair to SADC leaders, they did advise Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends not to participate in the 2013 elections without first implementing the reforms.
“In 2013 the Maputo Summit, in June 2013, before the elections, the Maputo Summit was all about having the elections postponed – the SADC summit. I went there,” Dr Ibbo Mandaza told Journalist Violet Gonda.
“I was there at the Summit and Mugabe pretended to agree to a postponement of the elections. If you recall, the postponement was based on the need to reform at least electoral laws.
“And after that Summit, Morgan Tsvangirai, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube, all of them were called to a separate meeting by the Heads of State of SADC in the absence of Mugabe, that same evening. And they were told; I was sitting there outside the room with Mac Maharaj; they were told ‘if you go into elections next month, you are going to lose; the elections are done’.”
As we know Tsvangirai and company ignored the stern warning and participated in the 2013 elections. Zanu PF blatantly rigged the elections, as SADC leaders had rightly predicted.
If anyone thought the MDC and the rest of the country’s opposition camp had learned the lesson and would be demanding meaningful democratic reforms BEFORE the 2018 elections, that was not to be. Nelson Chamisa, as the candidate of the MDC A, plus 21 other opposition candidates contested the presidential race even thou ZEC had failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters’ roll.
Zanu PF went on to blatantly rig the 2018 elections too.
By participating in these flawed and illegal elections the opposition is giving vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy.
The 2013 and 2018 elections were a mockery of democracy and should be roundly condemned and ERC should be making it clear with no misunderstanding and equivocation that the next elections be they by-elections or the 2023 elections will be a waste of time if they went ahead with no meaningful reforms implemented.
"The ERC explicitly emphasises that calls for electoral reforms and the reinstatement of by-elections do not imply a push for regime change, but are key for true representative democracy," ERC said.
This is nauseating!
The right to govern must be derived from the democratic wish of the people expressed in free, fair and credible elections and if the people’s democratic wish should mean regime change so be it. So why is ERC, an organisation supposedly fighting democratic rights and a meaningful say in the governance of one’s country, be ruling out regime change.
Regime change is not a dirty phrase as Zanu PF thugs have brainwashed many to believe. According to Zanu PF propaganda ordinary Zimbabweans are incapable of attain the political conscientiousness to desire Zanu PF regime change and so the party attributes all such desires to outside influence, the West. Of course, it is nonsense!
After 41 years of rigged elections the people of Zimbabwe must demand the implementation of the democratic reforms to ensure free, fair and credible elections. If the democratic wish of the people is for regime change, they must have regime change and no apology for that!

WHEN he took over power in a November 2017 coup, President Emmerson Mnangagwa won the hearts of many sceptics after he pledged to deal with corruption, a vice widely believed to be stalling development in the southern African country.
After disbanding the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) board accused of perpetrating corruption and appointing a new team, Mnangagwa went on to establish the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (Sacu) in his office to prove his determination to fight graft.
He also designated a specific court to deal with corruption cases.
But four years down the line, observers say the situation on the ground shows that his anti-graft fight was nothing but a facade.
Many people think Mnangagwa is using anti-graft fight to fight factionalism in his ruling Zanu-PF party.
Insiders within the ruling party have raised concerns over insignificant progress on convictions and prosecution of party members arrested by the Zacc and Sacu on graft charges.
Sacu, an arm in Mnangagwa's office, critics say is a tool to punish his political foes.
The criticism followed the arrest of several Zanu-PF bigwigs on graft charges following a "name-andshame" operation by the party youth league in 2019.
In 2018, then Home Affairs minister Obert Mpofu refused to appear before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy to give evidence on the alleged $15 billion diamond funds which went missing while he was still Mines minister.
It was obvious Mnangagwa’s promise to stamp out corruption was a farce from the word go.
Everyone knows that each of the state security armies have the infamous diamond mining concessions allowing the holder to mine without keeping records of the quantity and quality of diamonds mined, to whom the diamonds are sold and for how much, who are the beneficiaries of the mining activities, etc. The beneficiaries are no legal obligation to declare their earnings to anyone and have no corporate or personal income tax obligations. In short, the mining concessions are a licence to loot!
Everyone knows the top brass in the Army, like VP Chiwenga and the late Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo were some of the beneficiaries of the wholesale looting in Marange and Chiadzwa diamonds! By appointing the late Minister’s wife chairperson of ZACC, Mnangagwa was sending a clear message - those involved in the wholesale looting in Marange or similar looting activities will never ever be investigated. Never ever!
Mnangagwa was named as one of the Zimbabwe leaders involved in the looting of diamonds in the DRC in the 1990s when Zimbabwe’s Army was send to help Laurent Kabila fight insurgents. Mnangagwa is the godfather of corruption and it is nonsense to think he will stamp out corruption because his own greed are those around him are insatiable; the more the get the greater their hunger for more.
Besides, if Mnangagwa was ever to move to stamp out corruption, he will find himself out of office before sunset! It is the corrupt elite who are keeping him in power and they will drop him like a hot potato if he threatened their interests!
Muguti had on 29 July 2021 issued a press statement titled "Policy on Operations of Non-Governmental Organisations in Humanitarian and Development Assistance in Zimbabwe" stating that NGOs, Trusts, CSOs and FBOs who failed to comply with his directive issued on 30 June should immediately be stopped by police officers from conducting any operations.
In his directive issued on 30 June 2021, Muguti had accused some NGOs of straying from their mandates and demanded that they submit to him their work plans for activities to be conducted in 2021 including information on workshops, trainings, project and monthly reports of their operations.
This compelled Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum and Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition to file an urgent chamber application on 30 July 2021 challenging Muguti's directive and argued that he had no authority to supervise or control the operations of NGOs, Trusts, FBOs and CSOs.
This is a regime obsessed about controlling every facet of human activity. Most NGOs in Zimbabwe are Government Organised NGOs given the control the regime has over them and will have embedded spies too for good measure.
Most NGOs in Zimbabwe are frightened stiff of the regime they are worse than useless! Election Resource Centre was apologising that its call for democratic reform was not meant for regime change as if the people’s democratic right to a meaningful vote in Zimbabwe comes with limitations - no regime change.
The MDC Alliance is rallying citizens to unite, register to vote, vote and defend their vote to ensure a resounding opposition victory in the 2023 polls.
"Everywhere I go, people are struggling to make ends meet, put money in their pocket, get food for their families and roof above their heads. Life in Zimbabwe is such a daily fight for everything and anything from food, electricity, water, transport, jobs to money," Chamisa said.
"When Finance minister (Mthuli Ncube) is celebrating budget surplus, the budget cuts and excessive taxes have pushed 49% (7,9 million) of the population into extreme poverty up from three million people in 2011 (during government of national unity). In fact, in 2020 alone, 1,9 million Zimbabweans entered into extreme poverty," he said.
Nelson Chamisa promised the people of Zimbabwe “SOLID PLAN that will deliver real change”, he said. The sum total of the SOLID PLAN is “rallying citizens to unite, register to vote, vote and defend their vote to ensure a resounding opposition victory in the 2023 polls.”
This is just a rerun of the same strategies tried again and again in the past with the same result of failure. In 2018 Chamisa claimed that “MDC A had stringent measures to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections!” All lies of course, as Zanu PF rigged the elections.
There is mounting evidence that Zanu PF is rigging the 2023 elections. Why MDC keeps participating in flawed elections just to give vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy beggars belief!
