Batoka Gorge Hydro will never be built as long as Zanu PF remains in power! Zambians do not trust the regime. W Mukori

The long-awaited Batoka Gorge Hydroelectric Project, heralded as a potential solution to Zimbabwe and Zambia's ongoing power shortages, may face insurmountable challenges that could delay or derail its completion. The multi-billion-dollar project, which has been in the works since 1972, aims to harness the power of the Zambezi River to provide a much-needed boost to the energy grids of both countries. However, according to Zesa Holdings Executive Chairperson Sydney Gata, the project is fraught with significant hurdles, and its future remains uncertain.

Speaking at the ongoing Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit in Victoria Falls, Gata pointed out that while the Batoka Gorge project is touted as a solution to the persistent power outages in the two countries, it has not seen substantial progress over the decades. The project's capacity to generate 2,400 megawatts (MW) of electricity, which could help ease power shortages, is now in jeopardy due to unresolved technical and financial challenges.

"One of the reasons for the delay is that there has not been an exhaustive review of markets and hydrology," Gata said. "The project, as it stands today, will not work. There is also the issue of enforcement risk, stemming from the reconstitution of the Central African Power Corporation (Capco) and the formation of the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), a process that was not executed smoothly."

The Batoka Gorge Hydroelectric Project, which has been discussed for over four decades, saw renewed interest in the past decade due to the debilitating power cuts affecting citizens and businesses across both Zimbabwe and Zambia. Currently, the countries experience power outages lasting up to 15 hours a day due to a combination of factors, including low water levels at the Kariba Dam, the largest power station in the region.

As of the latest reports, the Kariba power plants, with a total capacity of 1,050 MW, are only generating 124 MW, severely limiting the countries' ability to meet electricity demand. Gata highlighted that decisions on energy projects, such as Batoka, have often been made at a political level without due consultation with experts and technocrats.

"We've been advocating for more extensive studies and a more honest assessment of the project's feasibility," Gata said. "There are models and investment options that could help mitigate risks, but they need further evaluation. Batoka is a victim of load factor risk and load profile risk, which can be addressed with more detailed feasibility studies."

The Batoka Gorge project resurfaced on the agenda in 2014 after being hindered by political instability and financial difficulties. In 2021, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), which oversees the Zambezi River and is jointly controlled by Zimbabwe and Zambia, revealed that the consortium awarded the contract for construction was struggling to secure sufficient funding, further delaying the project.

Wicknell Chivhayo, tender-entrepreneur per excellence, will have his winning bid to design, build, commission and even operate Batoka Gorge Hydro by the end of the month if only he did not have to worry about the Zambian officials! Comrade Gata and company awarded Chivhayo the Gwanda Solar Power Generation project. ZESA paid him hundreds of millions of dollars and all the nation ever got is a security guard soapbox to mark the site!

Mugabe chose to build his US$3-4 billion Blue Roof mansion, now just another white elephant since Grace is hardly ever in Zimbabwe; enough to have paid for the Batoka Gorge project! As long as Zanu PF remains in power it is bloody unlikely we will ever see Batoka Gorge Hydro completed! The regime is failing to maintain the infrastructure we inherit from the white in 1980 much less build new stuff!

One swallow does not herald the spring! How many millions of Zimbabweans out there would have built for themselves a decent home IF they had title deeds to the land?

Both Zanu Pf and the white regimes before it have stubbornly refused to grant black title deeds to even a few acres of land for fear the economically empowered blacks would demand political power too.

Even the few people Zanu PF has resettled on former white owned farms, they all have "offer letter", not title deeds. We all know the offer letters is not worth the paper it is written on. Some one only has to accuse you of supporting the opposition and you will be booted off the land!

The Zanu PF ruling elite have title deeds to hundred of thousand of hectare farms. They got the farms for nothing and are now parcelling the land and selling it. They are making fortunes as land barons!

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema will not attend the extraordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit set to address the Mozambique post-election crisis and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) conflict.

Instead, Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe will represent Zambia at the meeting.

"The President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, will be represented by Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, M.P. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation at the Extraordinary Summit of SADCHeads of State and Government in Harare, Zimbabwe, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 20th November, 2024," read a statement released by Zambia's Foreign Affairs ministry.

This marks Hichilema's second absence from a SADC summit following his virtual participation in the August gathering where Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa assumed the bloc's chairmanship.

Of the 16 heads of state invited to the summit, only four have so far confirmed their attendance: Botswana's President Duma Boko, outgoing Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, DRC President Félix Tshisekedi, and Madagascar's President Andry Rajoelina. Eswatini's King Mswati III will also be present.

Notable absentees include South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Angolan President João Lourenço.

Ramaphosa will be presented by his deputy Paul Mashatile.

President Mnangagwa and his ZANU-PF party continue to face allegations of meddling in regional elections, accusations they have repeatedly denied.”

SADC as a body has a fundamental problem - since it is a consensus based body it is only as strong as its weakest member. Most of the SADC country have no democratic values worth a spit and so it is not surprising that although SADC aspires to uphold democracy it has SADC has often made dubious and undemocratic decisions.

Still, I agree with what President Hichilema and Ramaphosa have done, they have shown their displeasure with what Mnangagwa has done in Mozambique by boycotting the summit. President Ramaphosa made a complete arse of himself by attending Mnangagwa’s inauguration knowing fully well he had rigged the elections. He is now making amends for his blunder!

Gukurahundi is a very serious and tragic event in Zimbabwe’s history only a nincompoop like you would not see that. Why should I have to be in Zimbabwe to talk about Gukurahundi?

Instead of address the serious issue you bring up idiotic and irrelevant issues, anything to sweep the massacre under the carpet. Well I will not be silence by a village idiot and those whose hands are red with the blood of the innocent must account for it.

Indeed, why are you so jumpy! How many Zimbabweans did you kill during Gikurahundi and beyond?

Stop talking nonsense! Mentioning the historic fact that 20 000 innocent Zimbabweans were murder by Zanu PF for the purposes of imposing the de facto Zanu PF dictatorship does not in any way to whatever inquiry on the massacre is taking place. The mass murders took place four decades ago, it was not me or anyone else who dare to mention Gukurahundi who delayed the inquiry. So what are you wittering about?

Why are you fuming and frothing at the mention of Gukurahundi? Are your hands red with the blood of the victims too?

You mean I should not hold Chamisa to account for selling out by failing to implement even one reform in 24 years and for lying about plugging vote rigging loop holes just because he is opposition? The sheer stupidity of your statement speaks volumes of your IQ.

The people of Zimbabwe have risked all to elect MDC/CCC leaders to implement the democratic changes the nation needs if we are ever to remove Zanu PF from office. After 24 years, including 5 in the GNU, it is clear MDC/CCC leaders are not to the task. Only a village idiot like you would continue to follow Chamisa for no other reason than he is an opposition leader.

The opposition have a task to perform, in the case of Zimbabwe to implement reforms to ensure free and fair elections. Chamisa and company have not only failed to implement even one token reform in 24 years but have been conning their brain dead supporters to participate in flawed elections to keep Zanu PF in power. Of course, Chamisa and company must go and only a village idiot would say otherwise!

Former First Lady Mrs. Grace Mugabe broke down in tears during a court session on Tuesday as some of the stolen personal items belonging to her late husband, former President Robert Gabriel Mugabe, were handed back to her. The emotional scene prompted the presiding magistrate, Ms. Esthere Chivasa, to call for a brief adjournment to allow Mrs. Mugabe to regain composure.

Theft from the Blue Roof Residence

The case involves four former employees - Allen Chinamonya (42), Danmore Chinamonya (35), Samson Karonga, and Tendai Bunganirwa - facing charges of unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances.

The accused allegedly broke into 11 containers stored at the Mugabe family's Blue Roof residence in Borrowdale, which contained household items moved there from Zimbabwe House following Mr. Mugabe's retirement in 2017.

The stolen property, valued at approximately USD 500,000, included television sets, clothing, cutlery, bed covers, bathing towels, and other household goods. Police have so far recovered items worth about USD 2,000.

Have these former workers been paid any wages or pension. It will come as no surprise that Grace has not paid them anything even though the four's annual wage bill is but a fraction of what she would spend on a pair of shoes or handbag.

So she broke down into tears to know that these workers were using her designer towels but was not moved to here they were living in abject poverty!

The extraordinary SADC Summit to discuss post election violence in Mozambique was yet another wasted opportunity to sort out that country's political crisis. This was largely expected given Mnangagwa chaired the summit - only 6 out of 16 heads of state bothered to attend. SADC has always been a weak body but it has never been so weak and feeble as it is now!

It costed the nation a staggering US$1.4 billion to build Hwange Unit 7 & 8 it is infuriating to now learn the two units are not generating because ZESA "has no money to pay for operations and maintenance and the coal"! This is like company buying a bus and yet the work force has to walk punishing long distances because there is no bus driver there is no money to buy fuel!

Feasibility studied for Hwange unit 7 & 8 were completed in the 1970s and the white regime of Ian Smith would have built the unit by 1980 if it was not for the war of independence. The two units are 50 years long over due and we cannot run them for the most idiotic excuses imaginable!

Zanu PF committed the Gukurahundi massacre and all the other vote rigging and murders that have these last 44 years for the sake of imposing a de facto one party dictatorship. The Zanu PF ruling elite and a few of the cronies have benefited from the decades of Zanu PF dictatorship at the expense of the whole nation. The suggestion that Zezurus or any other tribe benefited from the dictatorship is absurd.

The wheels of justice turn very slowly and hence the reason why it has taken decades for you and your fellow Zanu PF thugs to be held to account. You will be held to account, justice has finally caught up with you. You can tell the judge that you rigged the elections and committed the murders for Zezurus and see if that will get you off the hook!

Shocking News: Mnangagwa & Chiwenga Vakaba 15 Billion & Killed Cde Mujuru Witness Finally Speak Out.

Zanu PF has always been a party of ruthless thugs who did not care about peace, justice and freedom for all. All they wanted is to have absolute power and they did not hesitate ridding roughshod over the people denying them all including their right to free elections and even the right to life!

The tragedy for Zimbabwe is that when the people risked all to elect MDC/CCC for the express purpose of implementing reforms, Zanu PF bribed the opposition leaders and they sold out. To add salt to the tragedy, the people have been slow to wake up to the reality MDC/CCC leaders were no longer fighting in povo's corner. MDC/CCC leaders have failed to implement even one token reform in 24 years including 5 in the 2008 to 2013 GNU, why that has not set off alarm bell in the people beggars belief!

After 44 years of independence we are yet to hold free, fair and credible elections. Many Zimbabweans out there have no clue what constitutes free, fair and credible elections; in this day and age! No wonder we are a failed state!

Summit condemns Mozambique's post-election violence
by Staff reporter

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has strongly condemned the wave of post-election violence in Mozambique following the October 9 general elections, won by the ruling party Frelimo. Addressing the issue at the SADC Extraordinary Summit held at the New Parliament Building in Mount Hampden yesterday, SADC Executive Secretary Mr. Elias Magosi urged aggrieved parties to pursue their grievances through legal and constitutional channels.

SADC's Position on Mozambique's Unrest

In his opening remarks, Mr. Magosi expressed concern over the escalation of violence, which has claimed more than 30 lives, disrupted economic activities, and caused extensive damage to property.

"We did not expect election processes to deteriorate to such an extent, threatening human lives and creating instability," said Mr. Magosi. "There are appropriate structures under electoral laws and the constitution of member states to address complaints. We plead with all aggrieved parties to follow these procedures and prioritize the safety of citizens and national stability."

The violence, reportedly orchestrated by opposition parties, erupted immediately after Frelimo's candidate, Daniel Chapo, secured a landslide victory with over 70 percent of the vote. His closest rival, Mr. Venancio Mondlane, garnered 20 percent.
Mozambique's Response

In a national address on Tuesday, President Filipe Nyusi extended an olive branch to opposition leaders, inviting them to a dialogue to resolve the political impasse. However, the government has taken a firm stance against ongoing protests, which Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda has labeled "acts of terrorism."

Minister Ronda accused protest organizers of using "drugged" youths to foment chaos and pledged that the authorities would restore order.

There are those who said the SADC Extraordinary Summit in Harare would not only be a total waste of time but that attending it would send the wrong message - give the proceeding undue political credibility. These people have been proven right and so too was the decision by many SADC leaders not to attend.

There is a mountain of evidence that the election was not free, fair and credible. There is evidence that hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans voted for Frelimo, no doubt a through investigation would probably uncover even more. The brazen and contemptuous dismissal of this allegation by the Zimbabwe government officials including the Zimbabwe Ambassador to Mozambique and even the Zanu PF President Mnangagwa himself, who also happened to be the SADC chairman, chairing the summit.

It was clear the summit was not going to acknowledge Zanu PF’s nefarious role in the rigged elections and instead make the usual nauseating appeal for “aggrieved parties to lodge their complains the courts” (the same institutions that have repeatedly failed in their duty to hold free, fair and credible elections).

Over 50 lives were lost in the post-election violence, the greatest honour SADC should have paid to the dead was to make sure Mozambique implement the necessary democratic reforms to ensure future elections are free, fair and credible and the dead are the last to die protesting rigged elections.

Alas! The opportunity to get the reforms implemented was, once again, wasted by the officious buffoon, masquerading as SADC chairman, hell bent on rigging elections in his own Zimbabwe and exporting the practice to other nations. Whatever little reputation SADC had, it has lost it!

The First Lady has been an advocate for promoting domestic tourism and empowering communities through cultural heritage and hospitality initiatives. Her research is expected to contribute to sustainable practices and growth in the sector.

The MSU graduation ceremony will see a diverse group of learners from various disciplines celebrating their achievements, with Dr. Mnangagwa's accomplishment serving as an inspirational highlight.

Details of her PhD research focus are expected to be shared during the ceremony, further emphasizing her dedication to addressing key challenges and opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Some people have to earn their accolades others and they have again and again to prove they deserved the degree. Others have the accolades thrust upon them and their blundering incompetency in everything they do speaks volumes of their pretensions to know to hide their ignorance and stupidity.

Decades of poor funding have all but destroyed Zimbabwe's once upon a time first class education system. The quality in all but gone and in its place is the quantity. Zimbabwe is chaining out more University graduates, masters and PhD per capita than most nations.

Last year a senior government official admitted to a parliamentary committe the many Form 3 students can hardily read and write, grade 3 stuff. Some after 10 years of formal education the pupil cannot do what 3 years of quality formal education would do. The same dunderheads will go on to graduate and even be awarded doctorates!

Robert Mugabe had no few than 7 university degrees and looking at his legacy - he clearly knew fcuk all! If he was learned then why did he leave the country is such a mess. Mugabe's obsession of a wall-paper of university degrees, of quantity and damning quality, rubbered off on his fellow Zanu PF thugs big time.

So our education system has been reduced to decades of going to school and University only to get a piece of paper saying you are learned when you are not. We are obsessed with appearance and lost sight of substance. What a criminal waste of material and human resources!

We have become a nation of highly qualified individuals, on paper, but in reality ignorant and gullible and easily conned. Last year millions believed Chamisa’s idiotic lie that he had plugged all vote rigging loop holes and so the participated in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy and perpetuate the nation’s suffering.

We have the greatest number of University graduates who are so dumb and stupid they don’t even know what constitutes free and fair elections and hence believed Chamisa’s idiotic oxymoron of winning RIGGED elections! He is set to con the village idiots into participating in 2028 elections to perpetuate the dictatorship. Boy! What a nightmare!

The late Dr Joshua Nkomo is on record saying that Gukurahundi was a Zanu PF inspired war of political domination as contrast to a tribal war. Of course, he was right and time has proven him right. The imposition of the de facto Zanu PF one-party dictatorship has benefited Zanu PF thugs and not anyone else much less any tribe.

Some people have wanted to see Gukurahundi as a tribal war for their own selfish reasons of divide and rule. They have claimed that Matebeleland Provinces’ development, for example, have lagged behind that of other Provinces. And yet they have failed to name the developments to justify the claims. Unemployment, the sorry state of infrastructure, etc. is the same wherever you go!

The fight to dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship is in every level minded Zimbabwean’s interest because every one will stand to gain from democracy and good governance. This is a national issue and not a tribal one!

What is making the present story particularly obnoxious is that the regime is brazenly exporting its vote rigging expertise to other nation, there is evidence of the political interference, and yet the regime continues to deny it with its usual dismissive arrogance. Venâncio Mondlane announced today that he has accepted the meeting requested by the Mozambican President with the four presidential candidates for the October elections, to resolve the post-election conflict that has affected the country for a month, making the meeting's agenda dependent.

"I, Venâncio Mondlane, the winning candidate in the 2024 presidential elections, unreservedly accept this dialogue, I accept this dialogue table (…). But this dialogue, like any dialogue, like any negotiation, like any type of institutional meeting, must have an agenda", announced the presidential candidate, in a broadcast via his official account on the social network Facebook.

In order to "not go into a vacuum, without any agenda", he said that he will submit a document in the early hours of Friday, to the office of the President of the Republic, with a proposal "supported" by contributions from Mozambicans on the steps to follow in the process of contesting the announced results of the general elections of October 9, summarized in around 20 points that he will present publicly and that "represent the desires of the Mozambican people".

"Forty thousand people wrote [e-mails] to me and everything is summarized in the letter that will be submitted to the Presidency of the Republic", said Venâncio Mondlane.”

The efforts by both FRELIMO a the opposition to meet and resolve this matter is commendable. This is in stake contrast to the hawkish reaction by the Mnangagwa chair SADC Extraordinary Summit that condemned the post-election violence and even called the protestors “terrorists”. The Summit did not acknowledge the elections were indeed rigged.

Zanu PF has come out with all guns blazing to deny the regime involvement in the vote rigging. The videos of Zimbabweans voting are all “fake”, according to Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Mozambique, Victor Matemadanda.

SADC leaders must step in and help Mozambique solve this 50 year old problem of rigged elections. The leaders must exclude Mnangagwa and Zanu PF out of this, the regime has caused enough chaos and confusion already!

HARARE Mayor Jacob Mafume says the City Council is losing money due to a chaotic billing system and has failed to collect rates from over 100,000 houses illegally built in the capital.

Despite government pressure, Harare City Council has been struggling to address the billing system.

Posting on his X account Mafume said the City Council is failing to account for 100,000 illegal households.

If Zimbabwe were given title deeds to even a few acres of land in the rural areas all these houses being built in the nation’s towns and cities would be built in the rural areas and for good reasons too! Harare residents are forced to pay US$200 per month in rates for what? The council is not providing any water or sewage services, refuse is not collected, the roads have potholes, health services have collapsed, etc., etc.

In the urban centres most people have title deeds to the homes and for that you pay US$ 200 per month! Of course, the people are being swindled but what can they do? At least in the urban centres one is allowed to own property and are swindled by the opposition leaders.

In the rural areas you are not allowed to own anything and are subject to the endless harassment of the Zanu PF ruling elite and their proxies - tribal leaders, war veterans and the party’s own militia, the green bombers.

Neither Zanu PF nor MDC/CCC are interested in creating a just and prosperous Zimbabwe; they are each exploiting the people and a contend with the status quo.

If Zimbabweans are serious about a just and prosperous Zimbabwe then they have to fight both Zanu PF and MDC/CCC to get the democratic reforms finally implemented to ensure free, fair and credible elections. Neither Zanu PF nor MDC/CCC will ever implement the reforms, it is a pity that many Zimbabweans have yet to realise this simple political reality!

It is ironic that many Zimbabweans are building homes in urban centres because that is the only place they have title deed to a few acres of land and can own property. Some Harare residents are paying US$ 200 per month in Council rates for the privilege of having a Google Map address within city limits.

Of course, they are being swindled because the council is providing no water, does not collect refuse, roads have potholes, etc. Still they stay because in the rural areas they will have no title deeds and they will be subjected to the constant harassment by Zanu PF ruling elite and their officious proxies, the tribal leaders, war veterans the obnoxious Zanu PF youth militia, the green bombers!

If Zimbabweans are serious about living in a just, free and prosperous Zimbabwe then they must fight for reforms and free elections because Zanu PF and MDC/CCC are contend with the status quo, they are sharing the spoils of power.

Zimbabwe’s industries are worried that Chinese lenders, who financed the US$1.4 billion refurbishment of the Hwange Thermal Power Station, may “switch off” the facility due to ZESA Holdings’ struggles to service the debt.

If banks pull the trigger, Zimbabwe faces worsening power shortages, compounding the nation’s already dire economic situation, which includes inflation, foreign currency shortages, bankruptcies, and the loss of global brands.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind who knows the economic and political influence the Chinese have in Zimbabwe that the country would have been short changed in this Hwange Unit 7 & 8 project. The Chinese have been at the forefront of the wholesale looting of our diamonds, gold, lithium, etc. it is naive to believe there was no looting in the Hwange project.

Of course, the Chinese know that Zimbabwe is facing the worst electricity supply shortage ever made worse by the low water level in Kariba Dam. Instead of cutting the nation some slack and make sure Hwange Unit 7 & 8 are running to ease the power shortage, they are seeing this as an opportunity to squeeze the nation even harder. They want a pound of flesh!

Of course, even if we paid whatever they are asking for now, they will be back tomorrow demanding more. China allowed Zimbabwe to borrow money knowing fully well Zanu PF was wasteful and our national indebtedness to the Chinese will give them total control over our resources and destiny! Zimbabwe is a Chinese colon in all but name!

@ Mahupete

You have never given credit to ANC for holding free and fair elections because you have no clue what constitutes free and fair elections. It is pointless talking to someone like that!

"Are you disputing kuti Ramaphosa was parachuted into the position by apartheid era oligarchs? Are you disputing kuti he is their creation? Who determines what is free and what is fair? I have no obligation to give credit. You, have an obligation to give credit for obvious reasons..'

If that is indeed the case then thanks to the fact elections are free, fair and credible because South Africans have been able to reject him. The whites did not impose Mugabe or Mnangagwa and yet the nation has been stuck with the Zanu PF dictatorship for 44 years and counting!

Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies have enjoyed absolute power for 44 years, they are addicted to it and giving it up is simply unthinkable. They are doing everything they can to hang on to power and they see sister liberation parties being booted out of office as a forerunner of what is to happen to Zanu PF. The regime is so desperate to stop this trend it is blatantly interfering in the elections in other countries.

It is bad enough Zanu PF rigging elections in Zimbabwe but to be rigging elections in other countries is simply intolerable! Zanu PF has crossed the double red lines and SADC not act!

I totally agree with Former Botswana President Ian Khama, Zimbabwe did interfere in Mozambique's elections and must be booted out of the SADC regional grouping. No if, no but!

It is bad enough Zanu PF rigged Zimbabwe's 2023 elections but in interfering in other countries' elections the regime has crossed the double RED lines. SADC must boot out Zimbabwe out of the regional body!
