For meaningful economic recovery first end the pariah state P Guramatunhu

Zanu PF has rigged elections in the past and got away with it. This time things are different the issue of rigged elections is not going away and the party is at a loss what to do.

“Everybody who is in Zimbabwe has an obligation to recognise the President who was duly-elected in terms of the Constitution and the Constitutional Court made a pronouncement that President Mnangagwa was duly-elected,” said Paul Mangwana, Zanu PF secretary for Legal Affairs.

“It is an obligation upon every political player in the country to recognise that pronouncement by the Constitutional Court. The issue of the election of the President is not on the table and will not be on the table because the decision has been made by the highest court on that issue. We are not entertaining any discussion on that.”

There two main reasons why seven months since the elections the issue of Mnangagwa’s legitimacy is still a big issue:

  1. The November 2017 coup that ousted Robert Mugabe and Mnangagwa’s own promise to hold free, fair and credible elections raised the nation and the outside world’s expectation that the elections would be free, fair and credible. Mnangagwa had the audacity to invite EU, the Americans, the Commonwealth and many other nations and organisations with credible democratic credentials to observe the Zimbabwe elections. These observers have all condemned the election process as flawed, illegal and not to accepted international standards. The country failed to produce something as basic as a verified voters’ roll, a legal requirement, for Pete’s sake.

The Constitutional Court’s failure to pick all the glaring flaws and illegalities in the election process only served to confirm the court is corrupt and incompetent, just as the contact of the elections has shown that ZEC is corrupt and incompetent. The world remembered that same judiciary had ruled that the November 2017 military coup was “legal, justified and constitutional” to clear the way for Mnangagwa’s take over.

So the world was disappointed that Zanu PF had once again failed to hold free and fair elections confirming that Mugabe may have gone but the corrupt and ruthless dictatorship was still here or be it under new management.

  1. It should be remember that when Mnangagwa took over from Mugabe in 2017 the Zimbabwe economy was already in serious trouble with unemployment already 90%, basic services such as supply of clean water and health can all but collapsed, etc. Mnangagwa was praised for being pragmatic and identifying the need for the country to end its international isolation with his trademark “Zimbabwe is open for business!” clarion call.

The international isolation was born out of Zimbabwe being a pariah state ruled by corrupt and vote rigging thugs. So by failing to hold free, fair and credible elections, ending corruption, etc., as stated above, Mnangagwa failed to lift the pariah state curse and thus attract the much needed investment to revive the economy.

Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown has got a lot worse than it was under Mugabe. The country is experiencing shortages of foreign currency because of its failure to revive its agricultural and industrial production and over dependence on imports. The shortage of foreign currency has spilt over into shortage of fuel, wheat, medicine, etc.

There is no doubt that it is the worsening economic situation that has Mnangagwa and his regime’s competence constant under the spot light. Nelson Chamisa and his MDC Alliance are exploiting Zanu PF’s economic discomfort by claiming to be the ones behind the worsening economic situation and to have the key to unlock economic recovery. All nonsense, of course.

The key to unlock Zimbabwe’s economic recovery is ending the curse of rigged elections and pariah state! There will never be an meaningful economic recovery in Zimbabwe as long as the country remains a pariah state.

“We are saying, we have a Government in place, led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa there are areas which require improvement from a socio-political and economic perspective let us discuss those issues with full recognition that there is a President who was elected by the people of Zimbabwe,” argued the Mangwana.

Which part of “There will never be an meaningful economic recovery in Zimbabwe as long as the country remains a pariah state!” are you failing to understand. Well, you will understand because until you do, the economic situation is set to get worse.

Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by a corrupt and vote rigging Zanu Pf regime. Mnangagwa is illegitimate, he cannot even produce a verified voters’ roll of those who voted for him because there is no such roll! We cannot sweep this political reality that Zimbabwe is a pariah state under the carpet.

Of course, Mnangagwa and the rest of the Zanu PF leaders know they rigged last July’s elections and they are using brute force to subjugate and force the nation to accept the party as the government. The worsening economic situation demands meaningful regime change for meaningful economic recovery.

The only way out of this economic mess is for Zanu PF to step down to allow for the appointment of an interim administration that will implement the democratic reforms and holding of free and fair elections.

Zanu PF rigged the elections to confirm the situation of Zimbabwe as a pariah state ruled by corrupt and vote rigging thugs. As long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state the country will never develop. Mnangagwa's legitimacy is the only issue on the table.

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has said his party is determined to make Zimbabwe great again as was the case during the Mutapa and Great Zimbabwe empires.

This is just nonsense you guys sold out during the last GNU. You were tasked to implement the reforms and failed to get even one reform implemented in five years!

The Bond Notes had managed to keep their value relative the the USD because the government had resisted the temptation of printing more. Since RTGS dollars are all electronic money there is a real danger of the regime issuing more and more RTGS dollars and fueling inflation!

While presenting his MPS review, Minister Mthuli accepted that the 1:1 cost the country dearly in the process and is regrettable.

"We lost a total of $2 billion last year on the 1:1 forex exchange rate. We were killing the goose that was laying the golden eggs. By formalising and liberalising the exchange rate we will enable market and banks to lead the way as far as the forex exchange rates concerned," Ncube said at a breakfast meeting on Friday.

US$2 billion is a lot of money especially for a country like Zimbabwe whose GDP is US$10 billion. If we had competent MPs they will take Minister Ncube to task to establish what happened and more significant to make sure it will never happen again. As it is, it all water off a duck’s back!

Zanu PF rigged last July's elections; what is there to talk about? No wonder the nation is in a real mess, we have become experts at meaningless and time wasting activities. Unemployment has soared to dizzying heights of 90%, basic services such as supply of clean water and health care have all but collapse, etc. and yet no one is even concerned!

Speaking in Shona & English (code mixing) he said “Vamwe vanofunga hukuru hunoreva kuponda vanhu, handizvo!” (Some believe being a leader entails murdering people, that’s not it.) said Mugabe.

That is rich coming from a corrupt and murderous tyrant who ordered the Gukurahundi murders and lots more beside in his resolve to remain in power!

Minister Mthuli Ncube has since admitted that retaining the 1:1 exchange rate of BondNote to USD has costed the nation US$2 billion.

"The Minister of Finance has been following a carefully crafted reform program to restore fiscal and monetary stability within the framework of sound macro-economic conditions," Mr Cross is telling us here.

The truth is the Zimbabwe economy is in deep trouble and Minister Ncube has blundered from pillar to post. As for Mr Cross he is just a corrupt and incompetent MDC leaders who thinks he has the answers to everything when he does not!

@ Blessing Vava
Mnangagwa’s reckless and divisive utterances during the Mwenezi rally held over the weekend, where he openly issued threats targeted at human rights lawyers and doctors should leave any peace loving and citizens in general with opposing views worried. Mnagagwa said: “They told them that if anyone gets arrested, they should go to a certain place, there are lawyers waiting to defend them “If anyone gets hurt, they should go to a certain place, there are doctors waiting to treat them. “We are now going after those doctors who were involved in those activities. “Those lawyers that were inciting violence, we are now going after them. So those who choose violence, we are prepared.”
Anyone who believed Mnangagwa would hold free, fair and credible elections after risking his own life and limb to wrestle power from Mugabe is naïve. Indeed, Zimbabwe is in this mess because we have real naïve and gullible people.
Right now people should be standing up and firmly demand that Zanu PF steps down but are instead wasting time supporting this inter-party dialogue that will only result in Zanu PF sharing power in a new GNU at the very best. If anyone believes a new GNU will bring about any change then they are very naïve.
The country is in serious trouble and we are wasting time on solutions we should know by now will not work! How stupid is that!

When Mnangagwa finally got into power, after 37 years of being strung along by the cunning Robert Mugabe, he was cocky and arrogant. He never doubted for a minute that he would have Zimbabwe's economy back on track. He was confident his "Zimbabwe is open for business!" call would open the flood gates of investors. No investors came and the worsening economic meltdown has been a wake-up call for him.

A year ago who who have believed that the arrogant Zanu PF thugs would ever admit they have failed much less reach out to the opposition for help.

"We (Zanu PF) are saying, we have a Government in place, led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa there are areas which require improvement from a socio-political and economic perspective let us discuss those issues with full recognition that there is a President who was elected by the people of Zimbabwe," explained Paul Mangwana, the party’s secretary for legal affairs.

The very fact that Zanu PF is turning to the corrupt and incompetent opposition is a a sign the party has itself run-out of ideas and is so desperate for solutions it is turning to people it should know are equally clueless.

The real solution is for the party to step down to allow the nation to elect competent leaders. Indeed Zanu PF is having these talks with the opposition primarily because the party knows that the most the opposition will ask of Mnangagwa is to share power. They will be just as happy and content with that and never demand the holding of free, fair and credible elections.

Mark my words, Mnangagwa will be forced to revisit stepping down because the economic meltdown will continue to get worse until the nation cures itself of the curse of rigged elections and pariah state.

This Zanu PF regime rigged last July's elections making it illegitimate and making Zimbabwe a pariah state. Including Chamisa and one or two of his MDC friends in the regime will NOT change the country's status, we will still be a pariah state! Zanu PF is just wasting the nation's time and resources on these inter-party dialogue!

The revolutionary party "won" the elections but has clearly failed to win the fight for economic recovery as the economic meltdown is clearly getting worse. Mnangagwa was super-confident his "Zimbabwe is open for business!" would open the flood gate of investors. It did not!

Indeed, Zanu PF has "won" elections for the last 38 years and the national economy has sunk deeper and deeper into this hell-hole throughout the same period.

All you care about is Zanu PF remaining in power regardless of the economic misery the party has brought to millions of ordinary people. It is great that there are other Zimbabweans out there who see the bigger picture.

@ Andrew Noble

“The absence of a verified voters roll alone is enough to question the legitimacy of the election. On top of that the ZEC admitted it made errors in counting the vote then made more obvious errors when they tried to correct it. Either they were really stupid or just didn't care how it looked. And wasn't it convenient that ED got barely enough votes to avoid a run-off. They could only steal as many votes they needed or even the criminal SADC and AU would have to question endorsing the results,” you said.

Could not agree with you more. SADC leaders wanted the 2013 elections postponed because they knew without first implementing the reforms Zanu PF will rig the elections. No reforms were ever been implemented and Zanu PF rigged the 2013 and 2018 elections. Why SADC would now be endorsing these elections as free and fair beggars belief!
