When
former ambassador and deputy minister, Amos Midzi, reportedly committed suicide
last month it was no secret that he was up to his eyes in debt. That had not
been a problem whilst he remained a senior member of Zanu PF; the situation
completely changed as soon as he was kicked out of the party, in the on-going
purge of former VP Mujuru supporters.
Mai
Mujuru herself is now being sued by a little known banker who wants to recover
some farm the Mujurus took away from him. Whilst she was VP, he did not dare
sue her but now that she has been kicked out of the party, she is fair game!
The
truth of the matter is the economic meltdown is hitting everyone including the
Zanu PF chefs. However, unlike the rest of us, the chefs – as long as they
remain in their senior party position - have access to all manner of direct and
indirect assistance and they have the gravitas to tell their creditors to buzz
off.
The
chefs are like the boy scouts who pack up all the troubles in the old kitbag
and smile but on one very strict condition, they retain their senior Zanu PF
position! It was this strict conditionality that prompted the The Sunday Mail
columnist, Bishop Lazarus, to comment that Zanu PF
chefs cannot survive without the party.
"Can Zanu-PF politicians who hold high offices in the
party survive outside Zanu-PF?” asked Lazarus.
"Can Zanu-PF members who were fortunate to be appointed as Ministers, Deputy Ministers and so on survive outside Government?”
"Can Zanu-PF members who were fortunate to be appointed as Ministers, Deputy Ministers and so on survive outside Government?”
These
were rhetorical questions for we already know the answer to both questions is a
resounding no.
So the
economic meltdown is affecting everyone including the senior Zanu PF leaders,
they are not suffering yet but only because they are on pain killers. The rest
of us including ordinary Zanu PF members and party hardliners, do not have
access to the pain killers, are really suffering now.
Unemployment
has reached a record 90% and yet even more companies are set to close; 76% of
the population are living on $200 or less per month; etc. All these things
point to irrefutable conclusion – the present situation is not socially and
politically sustainable. The Zanu PF dictatorship is not socially and
politically sustainable; regime change is the only way out.
But
after 35 years of enjoying absolute political power and all the social and
economic benefits that it brought; it is not surprising that Mugabe, the lucky
few senior party members with access to the pain killers and the party’s
hardliners are more determined than ever to resist regime change. In their
futile effort to hang on to power Mugabe et al have turned the heat on all
those purged out of the party whom they now consider to be their greatest
political threat, particularly with the likes of Didymus Mutasa spilling the
beans of the party’s dirty secrets!
“These guys have now employed scotched earth
tactics in their desperate bid to completely destroy Mai Mujuru and all her
allies so that they are not a political threat come 2018. They are afraid of
the knowledge that these liberation struggle stalwarts have of Zanu PF.
“It has
not helped that (opposition leader Morgan) Tsvangirai now says he could work
with Mai Mujuru, while the likes of (former Presidential Affairs minister Didymus)
Mutasa and others are threatening to spill the beans on Zanu PF. They (Zanu PF
hardliners) want to decapitate the whole group (Mujuru camp).”
It’s
very sad,” a senior Zanu PF official said.
The
real tragedy here is their blind determination to retain this unsustainable
corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship, Mugabe et al are dragging the
whole nation deeper and deeper into hell just as the Japanese hardliners did in
1945.
By the
Spring of 1945 the Japanese had effectively been defeated, at sea, in air and
had been routed out of all the countries they had controlled until then. Japan
was nothing but a sitting duck totally at the mercy of the American military
might and yet the Japanese hardliners would not condescend surrender!
“There is still time, but little time, for the
Japanese to save themselves from the destruction that threatens them,” US
President Harry Truman warned in ultimatum.
“The
loss of one day relative to this matter (ignoring the ultimatum) may result in
a thousand years of regret,” warned the voices of reason amongst the Japanese.
A month
after President Truman’s ultimatum all hell broke loose, for the Japanese that
is, when the nuclear bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
Mugabe
and his hardliners are wasting time fighting the purged Zanu PF members because
they are but a spend force; the real big threat to the nation is from the havoc
the economic meltdown is causing. The economic meltdown is the nuclear bomb
that threatens all Zimbabweans today and, irony of all ironies, it is Mugabe
himself after 35 years of unrelenting mismanagement and corrupt who made this
bomb!

As far as Mugabe is concerned the whole liberation war was never about human rights and freedom and liberating blacks from white colonial oppression. It was all about absolute power; he wanted a one-party one-man dictatorship from the word go.
When the Lancaster House constitution forced a multi-party democracy on him, as soon as Mugabe got into power in 1980, he worked diligently to undermine all the democratic institutions to create a de facto one-man dictatorship. Mugabe has ignored the law, fired judges who dared to challenge his authority, rigged elections, threatened, beaten, raped and even murdered thousands of people to achieve his dictatorship.
Now after 35 years of his corrupt and tyrannical rule with the national economy in total ruins it is shocking that Mugabe and his hardliners cannot see that their dictatorship has run its course and has now come to the end of its line. They refuse to see the signs all along the track warning of the dead end ahead.
If the MDC leaders had implemented the democratic reforms when they had the five years of the GNU to do so then the nation will not be facing this nightmare and worse to come.
What the people of Zimbabwe must realize is the political and economic mess the country is in is man-made. Mugabe and his cronies are murderous thugs but above all else they are mortals. There is no jail on this earth built by a mortal that another mortal cannot break out of! It has always been within our powers to end the dictatorship but for 35 years we have elected to live with it!
If the ordinary Zimbabweans had spent even one hour a month thinking about the raft of democratic reforms agreed in the 2008 GPA, which everyone agreed were necessary for free and fair elections, then the people themselves would have seen to it that all the reforms were implemented. Most people were fast asleep and so the opportunity was lost and now the nation is paying dearly for it.
Even now with all the evidence that Mugabe and his cronies are corrupt, vote rigging murderous tyrants who do not care what further suffering and misery befalls the nation it is amazing how many people still hope against hope that the tyrant will for the first time ever do the right thing! These people are just too lazy to accept the reality that Mugabe is a tyrant because accepting means they will have to act to save themselves from their suffering and even save their own lives!
President Truman's warning is as much to Mugabe and his hardliners as to the millions Zimbabweans themselves; time is running out for them to save themselves by stopping this tyrant drag the whole nation over the edge into the abyss. It is in the people's power to stop him and if they do not, no one will do it for them!
@ Mudhara
The days when Zanu PF chefs used to go to the banks, especially the RBZ, and get as much cash as they wished are over. Last year Agriculture Minister Made announce there would be no more farming input loans cutting a source of ease money for these chefs. They are not repaying the old loans but that is about as much help they get now!
Of course Mugabe is rotten through and through what he has failed to accept is that there is no way his wife, children and all his cronies can ever hold on to all their loot in a country where so many have absolutely nothing! They would have retained some of their looted wealth if they accepted peaceful regime change but if we have a violent change, they will be lucky to escape with their lives!
No, Mugabe does not care about his family or anyone else. He is just a demented man whose love for power has got the better of him. He does not care about his own life otherwise he would not be going full steam ahead into a dead-end!
@ Ncube
Professor Ncube you call yourself a professor, an intellectual but all you have ever done is baffle the ordinary people will bull!
“I have always argued with the intellectual ideologues in my party that it does not matter what political persuasion one is, one must always be sensitive to the plight of the poor and disadvantaged in order to leave an indelible mark in one's political history,” you wrote, in now your weekly diatribe of diddle.
What “indelible mark” in the nation’s history did you leave after your five years as minister in the GNU?
You promised the nation that the Copac Constitution would deliver free, fair and credible elections and the nation should approved it in the March 2013 referendum.
“In my other life, I was a Lawyer Professor,” you told you listeners on S W Radio Africa. “A Constitutional Law Professor,” you repeated with emphasis. “And this Copac Constitution is one of the best constitutions I have ever come across!”
The people believed you and they approved the new constitution with an impressive 95% Yes vote.
You lied to the nation that the next elections would be free and fair to hide the fact that you and your fellow MDC leaders had sold out to Mugabe. Instead of implementing the raft of democratic reforms and drafting a democratic new constitution you lot had done nothing on both fronts. Mugabe had bribed you with the offer of the gravy train good life and you “were busy enjoying yourselves and forgot why you were in the GNU” as SADC heads latter noted disapprovingly.
Professor Ncube the only “indelible mark” you have left in Zimbabwe history is that you and your fellow MDC leaders failed to get even one democratic reform implemented throughout the five years of the GNU. The only mark you have left is that of sell –outs!
Ever since the rigged July 2013 elections you have been fighting hard to air-brush your sell-out image and re-launch yourself as one who cares passionately about the ordinary people, every week you shed rivers of crocodile tears, all in the hope that the nation will foolish enough to trust you and vote you back into office.
If you are corrupt, and/or incompetent and/or a sell-out, you do not get a second chance; it is strike one and you are out. You are, above all else, corrupt, incompetent and sell-out – all three - and therefore you certainly do not deserve another chance. You are out!
Prophet Walter Magaya says Mugabe is a “highly blessed and ranked man”. How can a ruthless and murderous tyrant be "highly blessed"?
It was Chairman Mao Zedong who said religion had become the opium to the people; Zimbabweans have now become totally addicted to religion. They now have given up life on earth as they focus all their attention on the life after. All their God given talents meant for this life are all being discarded if their pursuit of the next life; what a criminal waste of talent and life!
@ Dr Gucci
Are you telling me that the Zimbabwe electorate are voting for corrupt and incompetent leaders because there is no one else? Of course they voted for MDC in 2008 convinced they would deliver democratic change and economic prosperity, for example. They would not have been looking for anyone else because they thought they had competent leaders.
You are asking me to name someone who is not corrupt; so the electorate will have to take my word for it that the named individual is not corrupt. If ten other people are similarly named then the electorate are back to square one.
The solution is not that you or anyone else out there some name whom the electorate should vote for but that by understanding the national issues they will be able to judge for themselves who is the best candidate!
Our way out of this hell is by having a thinking electorate and not one that will follow blindly like sheep! The right to vote carries with it the duty to understand the issues at stake and then cast an informed vote.
@ Chirambadare
No the real idiot is one who will not accept that A is corrupt regardless of the evidence proving that A is indeed corrupt just because he or she is a member of the party led by A.
Let me state here and now that Mugabe is a corrupt and murderous tyrant because there is a mountain of evidence to prove that he is.
Let me also state it here and now that Tsvangirai is corrupt and incompetent because there is a mountain of evidence to prove that too!
In short, I go where the evidence leads me! Can you say the same?
@ Bobsled
I agree. Tyrants like Mugabe have been drumming up the anti-white rhetoric to draw attention away from their failures to deliver freedom, human rights, economic prosperity. We are such a naive and gullible lot it has worked like a charm. Mugabe is one of the most corrupt and oppressive tyrant in human history and yet it is his victims who love him with a blind passion because he has been clever at telling them it is the whites who are behind all their suffering and that he hates the whites!
