The Catholic Commission
for Peace and Justice (CCJP) has dismissed Zimbabwe’s 2013 elections as a
fiasco in its lasted report on the elections.
Bishop Alex Muchabaiwa
is now the CCJP chairperson in Zimbabwe and one of the authors of the report.
“It might not be far
from the truth if we say some people voted in July 2013 elections to save their
lives, limbs and property. They wanted to avoid a repeat of 2008”, stated the
report. Bishop Alex Muchabaiwa is the chairperson of CCJP in Zimbabwe and one
of the authors of the report.
Implementing the democratic
reforms and holding free and fair elections was the key to ending Zimbabwe's economic
and political crisis after the 2008 elections. The GPA made the same point and
it was a great pity that after five years of the GNU not even one reform was implemented.
It was a great national
tragedy that the opportunity to end this corrupt and repressive Zanu PF government
was lost as Mugabe went on to rig the elections. This Zapu PF regime is
illegitimate and the sooner the country is allowed to have a legitimate government
the sooner it can start the difficult tasks of rebuilding the nation’s badly
damaged political institutions and national economy.
The democratic reforms
must be implemented and free and fair elections held, there is no other way
out!
Since the rigged 2013 elections
the Zimbabwe economy has taken a dangerous nose dive causing increasing
economic hardship on the people right across the board. Two weeks ago the Zanu
PF spokesman, Rugare Gumbo said the party was willing to talk on how to end the
economic crisis. It is important that the party should treat these talks with
the seriousness and urgency the mater demands!
Conclusion
The Zimbabwe economy is
so weak it is failing to supply even the most basic services like clean running
water and unemployment has reached nauseating heights of 85% plus. We are sitting
on ticking health and social time bombs. Mugabe and Zanu PF thought they could
rig economic recovery and they have clearly failed to do so; indeed they have
made the situation even worse.
Only a government coming
out of free and fair elections have competence and national and international support
to defuse these time bombs!

People like Jacob Mafume and his MDC friends still show that they do not have a full grasp of the seriousness of their failure to implement the reforms.
“We need the new Constitution, which contains many of the things agreed in the GPA, to be implemented. We need ZEC to take the voters roll from Tobaiwa Mudede’s office and institutionalise many of these reforms then we can participate in elections,” Mafume said.
The Copac constitution was weak and feeble; it was never going to delivery free and fair elec-tions as we have already seen. Tsvangirai claimed it was "the brainchild of MDC" but we know it was "Mugabe who dictated" it as Zanu PF Copac Co-chairperson, Paul Mangwana boasted. The nation spent $100 million writing that rubbish!
Removing responsibility from Tobaiwa Mudede's office to ZEC is no way near enough to guarantee free and fair election; both institutions, as well as others, need serious democratic reform. We must carry out the necessary reforms and put Zimbabwe on a firm democratic footing once and once for all and not fudge it again!
Mafume's explanation as to why MDC had failed to get even one reform implemented was they expected “miracles would occur” only confirms what we already know that they are breathtakingly incompetent. It was bad enough entrusting the nation's destiny in the hands of MDC when we did not know they are incompetent it will be sheer folly to do so now when they have proven beyond all doubt just how breathtakingly incompetent they are!
@ PanAfricanist
I did offer a solution; implement the democratic reforms and then hold free and fair elections.
Both Mugabe and Tsvangirai must be excluded from the process because they both failed to implement any reforms during the five years of the GNU and their presence will only be a distraction at best.
Zimbabwe has a population of 12 million it is nonsense that we cannot find 20 people to lead the interim administration and so have to ask the same thugs and incompetent idiots to lead! Utter nonsense!
The BRICS nations, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have agreed to form a bank to compete with IMF and WB. The new $50 billion development bank will have its HQ in Shanghai, China.
This is a great idea but the lack of democratic accountability in countries like China and Russia will always be the bank's Achilles heel!
@ Itai Dzamara
You are right that the MDC renewal project is running out of steam. Their biggest problem was trying to blame Tsvangirai for the party's failure to implement the reforms when everyone with eyes to see knew they were all equally to blame. as for those with no eyes, they have never un-derstood what the reforms were for any therefore Tsvangirai had done no wrong.
So Tsvangirai kept his herd of blind followers and Biti lost those with a bit of brain between their ears because his attempt to blame Tsvangirai insulted their intelligence.
Tsvangirai will not be celebrating for long though because this issue of failing to implement the reforms is not going away and the herd is beginning to pay attention. Once they have their eyes opened and they understand what really happened Tsvangirai's name will be mud!
The Zimbabwe electorate are very slow at picking things; it took them 15 years, at least, before they finally sussed out that Mugabe was not the great national hero he claimed to be but just a corrupt and murderous tyrant who did not care about their suffering but only cared about wealth and power. They will so realise that Tsvangirai is just an incompetent village idiot who was easily bamboozled by Mugabe not to implement the reforms.
All the people have lacked is information; both Mugabe and Tsvangirai have conspired to keep the ordinary Zimbabweans ignorant. Open up and have free flow of information and you will see just how quickly the people will respond.
Free flow of information is top on the reform agenda!
Mugabe is reportedly spending millions to keep MPs, journalists and judges sweet!
Mugabe's mass prosperity has produced mass poverty at such a breakneck speed he is fighting a losing battle both ends of the scale. He thought he could afford to keep the masses poor but even he is shocked at the depth of depravity the poor have sunk too and in such big numbers too.
At the other end he thought he would hundreds of thousands, if not millions, ruling elite filthy rich and happy. The country's economic collapse has meant he has had to spend even more to stop the rich jointing the poor but because the cake was getting smaller he has been force to cut the numbers of those who get a piece.
When party grandees like the late Shamuyarira have been living in abject poverty, it is clear that the rich ruling elite numbers are now a few hundred!
None of the MPs, journalist and judges he is spoiling now are under any illusion that this is going to last for much longer. Indeed if I was one of them, I would refuse any of this loot because it will only make me stick out like a sore thumb. Mugabe and his cronies will have a lot to answer for and the trail of the looted wealth will make them stand out and easy to find.
@ Whichfool
Shamuyarira is not the only Zanu PF grandee who lived in abject poverty there thousands others who are facing the same nightmares of no running water, bills but no money to pay them with, etc.
Propaganda has its limits; you can tell Police Office the country is doing well whilst his boots are new and he will believe you but when they are worn out he will know you are taking him for a fool! In Zimbabwe today all Police Officers boots and uniforms are also worn out and I would be careful not to go around insulting people if I was you!
@ Douglas Togaraseyi Mwonzora
MDC has some of the most breathtakingly incompetent leaders in the country; whilst some of them have the good sense of keeping their mouths shut Mwonzora has a problem with doing that. And sadly for him each time he opens only nonsense comes out.
Mwonzora will be best remember as the man who praised the Copac constitution to the moon and back promising again and again that it would deliver free and fair elections guaranteed. Of course it did no such thing as the nation has since learnt and has been paying dearly for since the rigged 2013 elections. But let us have a look at what “motor mouth” Mwonzora is saying here.
"This (to realise MDC’s vision of creating a democratic Zimbabwe) meant completely dismantling the evil system of dictatorship sustained by violence, corruption and selective application of the law," Mwonzora says in one sentence.
"Under the leadership of Morgan Tsvangirai the MDC has over the years prosecuted the demo-cratic struggle well against the odds," he says in the very next sentence. What an insult!
MDC had the majority in the GNU parliament and cabinet and it was tasked in the GPA to im-plement democratic reforms and had five years to do this. And yet not even one reform was im-plemented. The GNU waste $100 million writing a weak and feeble Copac constitution which Mwonzora’s co-chairperson Zanu PF’s Paul Mangwana boasted was dictated by Mugabe.
SADC leaders told MDC to implement the reforms again and again and still nothing was done. In sheer exasperation SADC leaders accused MDC leaders of “enjoying the benefit of power and forgetting why they were in government”!
So instead of people like Mwonzora apologizing to the good people of Zimbabwe for betraying them and forgetting to implement even one reform he has the audacity to tell us MDC “prosecuted the democratic struggle against the odds”!
We need to fight for a truly free media and freedom of expression because once we have a very informed electorate none of these breathtakingly incompetent individuals like Mwonzora will be able to take them for a ride!
Zimbabwe’s trade deficit for the last three years to July 2014 was $6.3 billion.
The signs of the country’s economic nose dive are there everywhere and they are like mountain fires the regime cannot hide them!
@ Tawanda
The 2008 did bring a number of significant economic changes because there were two things the nation could do and did; scrap the Z$ and end price controls. Within weeks of doing these things inflation dropped from 500 billion % to single digit figures and the shop filled with goods. GNU2 will have no such easy answers.
You are right Zanu PF has lost credibility after rigging the elections. But this time MDC too has lost credibility after failing to implement even one democratic reform.
Both Zanu PF and MDC will not want to talk about implementing the democratic reforms for dif-ferent reasons and so the prospect of a legitimate government emerging soon will be zero. The international community is not interested in dealing with anything else other than a legitimate government.
My view is that Zanu PF should accept that it has failed and step aside and allow an interim ad-ministration to be appointed. The administration will be tasked to implement the reforms and hold fresh elections.
Of course both Zanu PF and MDC would want to play a key but the truth is neither will contribute anything of value. The nation is facing a real economic nightmare and can ill afford to waste time watching two crabs doing salsa dance! Whether or not the two crabs square up for a dance will depend on whether the Zimbabwe public are awake and demand the two step aside and stop wasting time!
As for the international community if the people of Zimbabwe want to see crabs dancing; they will only step in to help when we have shown the world we are serious about finding answers to our problems. Staging a crab dance will only say that we are not serious!
@ Mukanya
GNU markII will appeal to both MDC and Zanu PF even if it fails to delivery economic recovery because it will get the former back on the gravy train after a year out in the cold. Mugabe will have someone else to blame for the economic meltdown, at least for a short period.
There is a growing voice saying both Zanu PF and MDC are failures and they must go; a worsening economic situation under GNU mark II will amplify that voice. Mugabe will be hoping that GNU mark II would have existed for three or four years and so he can hold fresh elections and see what comes next. He might even be died and so he would have managed to live out his wish of live-president!
One thing is certain though every day, week and month that goes by without doing something to end this economic meltdown means makes the economic recovery that much harder. The situation will be even worse if the ticking health or/and social time bombs were to blow up in our faces!
@ Sammy Moyo
Zanmu PF is still in power because MDC failed to implement the democratic reforms that would have made it impossible for Mugabe to rig the elections! MDC had all the opportunity and time to implement the reforms they did not because they are corrupt, Mugabe laid a honey trap they failed to resist and because they are breathtakingly incompetent.
Anyone who, with the benefit of hindsight, cannot see just how incompetent Tsvangirai and his MDC friends are is showing just how shallow he or she is. Sadly we do have many Zimbabweans like him/her; hard wired to follow blindly without ever asking any questions! You are one of those; with a hard wired brain, hermetically sealed and impermeable to reason!
Mugabe has been at it again, nagging the Chinese to bankroll his $27 billion ZimAsset extravaganza! They have already said no but he is not one to give up particularly when with the empty ZimAsset begging bowl mocking him and the rogue, poverty, toying and tormenting millions of Zimbabwean including Zanu PF grandees like the late Nathan Shamuyarira, like a cat playing with a mouse.
“Our relations with China are historical relations, they are revolutionary relations. We related to China for a long, long time during our struggle before our independence,” pleaded Mugabe with the Chinese delegates visiting Zimbabwe.
“We will be talking about how we can, together, once again, help each other now in our socio-economic programmes — another revolution to develop our countries so the fruits of what we fought for together can be yielded by yet another struggle, joint struggle.”
Of course the Chinese are not stupid; they know it was the 34 years of reckless spending that have left Zimbabwe in this sorry economic state. The corruption and looting have now become so rampant it has eaten everything from within and what is left now is but the outer shell which is collapsing in on itself.
All Mugabe knows is how to spend, spend, spend. How many Chinese leaders live in a mansion comparable to his columned hall Blue Roof palace? He has just complete a equally impressive three storey mansion in Mapfeni Farm, Mazowe, for his daughter Bona Nyapudzai; reportedly built by the Chinese. Even if the Chinese were to give him the money it will all go into paying civil servant wages, building more mansions for his other children. None of it will help in anyway generate wealth to repay the loan.
What Zimbabwe needs above all else is to put an empty to its criminal waste of human and material resources by ending the mismanagement and the corruption. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can ever be accomplished until remove this Mugabe dictatorship from power.
@tym4change
I could not agree with you more. Mugabe and Tsvangirai have already proven that they are corrupt and incompetent it is sheer laziness that has stop us throwing them out. We have been too lazy to suss out what we really wanted in a leader and then go out and look for him or her. It was less demanding to just accept whatever rubbish is presented before us. Kungo kuvirira zvose mavhu namarara.
MDC supporters are known for chanting “Change! Change!” but ask them what was the change they were calling for – lights out! They do not have a clue. If they did then they would have demanded the implementation of the reforms because that was the change the nation has been dying for!
We all rip as we sow! We voted for a corrupt and incompetent leader like Tsvangirai, he failed to implement even one reform and Mugabe was able to rig the elections landing us in this mess! If we are stupid enough to vote for him again then we can be sure of one thing we will remain stuck in this mess!
After 34 years of independence, we cannot really say we do not deserve this Zanu PF government and MDC opposition. We had ample opportunities to get rid of them but never did! We love murderous tyrants and incompetent idiots!
Yes Chino the ministers are "educated and useless". You on the other hand, you are just an uneducated ruffian with a big mouth and equally useless!
The whole economic facade is collapsing, the corruption and waste is simply unsustainable and you naively expect companies to thrive regardless?
Mugabe has used people like you to terrorize the people and keep himself in power. You will be held to account for all the innocent blood you have shed.
It is the axe that forget but not the tree that was cut down!
@ Gugugu Magorira
I hate people who give with one hand and make a big song and dance about it and yet take away with the other; say one sensible thing one minute and yet continue in their stupid way anyway; public denounce violence and yet go home and beat the wife! As if having by denouncing the violence they have earned themselves brownie credit points to be spent beating the wife!
"It will be foolish for any political leader anywhere to continue engaging bad leaders,” you say. Great, just what the country needs!
“Our hopes as MDC supporters are still on Ncube and not on the bad-mouthing renewal team that has been badly infiltrated by the Tsvangirai people.” Just how do you expect to fit that square peg in the round hole?
Never mind the bad-mouthing of MDC renewal or anyone else. Professor Welshman Ncube was in the GNU that failed to implement even one democratic reforms and thus allowing Mugabe to rig the elections. That makes him together with Tsvangirai, Biti and all the other MDC leaders corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent. If you are serious about never again to engage “bad leaders” then how can you still be placing your hopes on Ncube?
Zimbabwe is losing $800 million every month in gold smuggled and sold outside the country alone. The country has been haemorrhaging billions in diamond smuggled out of Marange and Chiadzwa. Add to that the billions wasted in mismanagement and corruption in government and parastatals. There is no doubt that Zimbabwe is a very wealthy country with great potential for economic prosperity, the fact that so many should be languishing in abject poverty and despair is an outrage and goes against the grain. This is so only because the country has had the great misfortune of being ruled by some of the most corrupt and competent leaders one can imagine!
“It does not make sense for us to sell to Fidelity,” was Paul Mangwana, Zimbabwe Artisanal Min-ers and Small Scale Council (ZAMSC) board member, excuse for the gold smuggling to parlia-ment. “We are losing tonnes and tonnes of our gold, which is going to South Africa, where deal-ers buy at five percent above the prevailing world prices. Local miners take the risk to go and sell there. As a result, we are building South Africa instead of building Zimbabwe.”
The idiot has the audacity to even justify the smuggling before parliament itself!
There is simply no political will to do the right thing and so everyone is in it to enrich themselves as quickly as possible at the expense of the common good. We need to overhaul this corrupt Zanu PF way of doing things now or this nation is doomed! This criminal waste of human and material resources has been going on for decades and has destroyed everything of value including our very humanity and self-respect! We must end the madness now!
SW Radio Africa will end its sw radio transmissions tomorrow 18 July 2014 after 13 years.
S W Radio Africa had been a beacon of light to millions of Zimbabweans who were being kept in the dark by their own government. Now that light is being blown out.
It is times like this that one really regrets that MDC had failed to implement the democratic re-forms when they had all the chances to do so. Damn! Damn! DAMN!
One hopes that the resources will be found to allow the beacon to be lighted again soon day soon.
One also hopes that this Zanu PF dictatorship will collapse soon so that the public media will finally do its duty and provide light for all Zimbabweans!
