Eddie Cross insist GNU performance was "best" is an insult!

“In the past two weeks we have seen Zanu PF virtually tearing itself apart and in the process it is sealing the fate of the country. I have never seen the country in such a state of despair and despondency,” wrote Eddie Cross in his latest article “Zanu PF pressing the self-destruct button!”

Yes Zanu PF is tearing itself apart and it was none other than Mugabe himself who pressed the self-destruct button by kicking out Joice Mujuru out of the party because she had amassed 8 out 10 provinces to support her bid to be Vice President in the forthcoming party elective congress. Mugabe had her and many of those supporting her kicked out of the party because he did not want her election would have meant the first ever orderly and democratic transfer of power in the party. He did not want that!

Mugabe had managed to stay in power as leader of his party and government for 35 years by denying the opposition the democratic political space and by keeping his own party Zanu PF in a constant flux of two or three warring factions. He has done his best to promote weak leaders in each faction so the faction is weak and whilst being careful no one faction ever emerged to dominated the other faction(s). Joice Mujuru with her 8 out of 10 province following was going to upset his carefully laid master plan and that is why she was “baby dumped”, as Grace Mugabe put it!

By foiling an orderly and democratic change of guard Mugabe has successfully manage to stay top dog but the down side of this is he has forced the party and nation to have a disorderly change of guard. With Mugabe now at a ripe old age of 91 and sickly everyone can see he is going and thus the fight to replace him is hotting up. When he dumped Joice Mujuru, he might just as well have fired the starting gun for the scramble for power in his party.

“Although we have been a State at war with itself for 35 years, only now have elements come into play with the means and the determination to take whatever steps are required to assume control of what is left of Zimbabwe,” noted Eddie. “Like a pack of hyenas seeking to take a carcass away from an elderly lion.”

Oh yes Mugabe has press the self-destruct button of his party Zanu PF but what is worse the imploding Zanu PF is threatening to drag the whole nation into the abyss with it! And here is where I beg to differ with Eddie Cross; he has continues to deny he has had no part in getting the nation into this precarious and sorry state.

“I was regarded in 1976 as an “enemy of the State” for my political and economic views. The same can be said of me today, but I am not going to change or flee to safer climes. Instead I choose to do what Willy Margolis advised nearly 50 years ago – go about your business and do it to the best of your ability,” said Eddie.

Eddie Cross and his MDC friends’ business during the five years of the GNU was, above all else, to implement the raft of democratic reforms agreed in the GPA. They failed to get even one reform implemented in five years of the GNU. Not even one!

Mugabe bribed Eddie Cross and his fellow MDC leaders with the good life of the gravy train just as he has bribed his own Zanu PF party members. The Zanu PF members have enjoyed decades of absolute power and had their share of the looting and plunder of the nation’s wealth and riches. In return, they have turned a blind eye to Mugabe’s corrupt and murderous tyrannical rule.

Tsvangirai was appointed Prime Minister and many of his MDC friends were given ministerial positions complete with the ministerial cars, generous allowances and salaries and the political standing. Tsvangirai got his $4 million Highlands Mansion to sweeten the deal. All MDC leaders had to do in return was to kick all the reforms into the tall grass; and they did!

If MDC had implemented the democratic reforms during the GNU years we would not be in this mess at the mercy of a rogue tyrant who has pressed the self-destruct button of his own party and facing the real danger that the whole nation will be dragged into the abyss with the party.

Mr Cross, by failing to get even one reform implemented you and your MDC friends sold-out during the GNU. The least you can do is apologize to the good people of Zimbabwe who are now paying with their very lives for your folly. Your continued insistence that you did your best on this matter is rubbing hot chilli in their eyes and an insult to their intelligence. Stop it! For heaven’s sake stop it!
