Tsvangirai admits he failed to floor Mugabe in the “stolen
elections” but he is confident that an economic collapse will floor the tyrant
for him. Tsvangirai got into power on the cocktail of the Zimbabwe’s economic
melt-down in which the economy shrunk by a staggering 84% in the six year
period 2002 to 2008 alone. He is now banking on another economic melt-down or
worse to propel him back into power.
Yes the economy is going to floor Mugabe but does Tsvangirai
realize that in flooring Mugabe the economic will have buried alive millions of
Zimbabweans too!
Two
things happened after 2008 to stop the economic rot: one, the Z$ was scrapped
and the second thing was all price controls were lifted. This was enough to
allow shop to fill up with goods and end the shortages and to allow the most
basic business activities to resume. These were not enough to allow long term
confidence to return; for that it was necessary to end corruption and restore
the rule of law. This is why there was a whole raft political reforms agreed in
the GPA. It was Tsvangirai’s responsibility to ensure the reforms were
implemented.
Tsvangirai had five years to implement the reforms
and failed to get even one reform implemented. Now he is placing his hopes
on Mugabe totally destroying the nation economy and in the process destroy
the Zanu PF dictatorship too.
If
Tsvangirai had implemented the democratic reform then the July elections would
have been free, fair and credible. The government that would have emerged would
have been a totally different animal; not this blood sucking monster.
Tsvangirai
did not implement the reforms because he was incompetent, first and far most.
He was sure the little economic recovery; little because unemployment dropped
from 90% to 80%, for example; was enough to get him re-elected regardless the
dirty tricks Mugabe will play because of the lack of democratic reforms.
Tsvangirai
was upbeat about winning the elections until noon on election-day. It was that then
that he finally realized the extend of the vote rigging by Mugabe. He was not just
floored by the tyrant, it was a technical knock-out!
Now
Tsvangirai has his fingers, toes, arms and legs crossed hoping for another
economic melt-down so that the Zimbabwean electorate in desperation will turn
to him once again. He will have to stay in this position for a very long time,
indeed.
To
start whilst it is clear Mugabe will never implement any meaningful democratic
reforms necessary for the return of long term economic confidence is not going
to return to the same failed economic policies of the past either. Finance
Minister has repeatedly said there are no plans to return to the Z$ soon, for
example. Besides Mugabe has been selling the nation’s jewels to buy himself
breathing spare.
Tsvangirai
is being his usual naïve self to believe the Zimbabwean electorate are going to
be so desperate for change that they will ignore his blundering incompetence of
the last five years and once again turn to him.

Yes for Mugabe and his cronies nothing will change; they will continue to enjoy their lavish lifestyles and for the millions of ordinary Zimbabweans there will be no electricity, water, no jobs, etc. What will floor Mugabe is that the people will renew their resolve to end Zanu PF rule. And, hopefully, this time the nation will have a better leader to do it; unlike the blundering Tsvangirai!
@ Sydney
If you really think no one could have implemented any of the democratic reforms and write a democratic constitution then you must be one of the shallow minded people on earth. Even with the benefit of hindsight you still believe no one could have got the reforms implemented. You really are blind!
Even the incompetent Tsvangirai could have got five or so reforms implemented if he had tried.
@ Rafique
Make up your mind; you say earlier Tsvangirai saved the country and now you admit he took his eyes off the ball! Did he save the country by taking his eyes off the ball?
MDC is a party led by some of the most incompetent politicians of our time. Zimbabweans need to accept that reality and move on. Failure to see that reality is itself proof of just how incompetent the Zimbabwe electorate is!
If some one as incompetent as Tsvangirai can take millions of Zimbabweans for a ride and they do not see it, even with the benefit of hindsight they still can not see it.
It is clear they will be taken for a ride by every Tom, Dick and Harry out there. Trust me, there are 28 political parties all fighting to take advantage of the dozy Zimbabwe electorate!
So whether MDC implode or not it is irrelevant really. If MDC does not take advantage of the people there will be plenty other parties who will!
@ Guvhu
You meaning it is business as usual! You murdered over 30 000 already and plan to go on killing. Well let me tell you something; you will have to account for all the innocent blood you have shed one of these days. The Zanu PF dictatorship is on its last legs and the day of judgement is fast upon us!
@ Djose
How many University graduate or anyone else for that matter would want to sell oranges up and down the road if they could have a challenging and better paying job? Millions of people are into Kiya Kiya out of sheer desperation not out of choice.
Mugabe did not win the July 2013 elections, he rigged the vote.
If you are trying to justify why Mugabe rigged the elections - because Tsvangirai would not have got unemployment down to 25-50% anywhere - then try again.
Even if Mugabe had managed to get unemployment to drop to 25% overnight still that would be no excuse for him to rig the elections. Accept the excuse and that would beg the questions; what if he rigged the elections and unemployment, corruption, political repression, etc. did not get better but got even worse?
Having rigged the elections once, what is there to stop him rigging the elections again and again and again? What then! We are stuck!
Of course that is exactly what has happened; Mugabe rigged the elections and already it is clear things are getting worse not better.
In all his 33 years in power Mugabe is yet to hold free and fair elections. We have had 33 years of rigged elections with the 2008 and 2013 seeing some of the worst vote rigging. 2008 elections were marred by wanton violence and this year the tyrant has squandered at least $3 billion, nearly half the country’s $7.7 billion GDP, in an expensive vote rigging operation.
We are stuck in a vicious cycle alright and the way out is to refuse to accept that anyone who rigs an election has the right to govern the country. We have allowed Mugabe to get away with vote rigging before time and again. It was a grave mistake and the nation has paid dearly for it.
Mugabe cheated and denied the people their basic right to a meaningful say in the governance of the country. That is high treason and he should be punished! Instead we are not only turning a blind eye to this criminal act but are even rewarding him and his cronies by allowing them rule the country and ride rough shod over the nation for yet another five torturous years? Meanwhile they can lay the ground work to rig yet another election!
It is either we hate ourselves to self-destruction or we are unbelievably stupid!
Enough is enough for surly we must have learnt from 33 years of making the same mistake not to make it again.
The only logical and effective way of stopping vote rigging and suffering the consequence of an unelected regime doing as it pleases is acknowledging that those who rigged are illegitimate and per se have no right to govern; period!
