Mugabe says the minimum wage
for the civil servants should be increased from $297 to $540 per month.
"He (Mugabe) felt it
was not good that civil servants be underpaid as has been the case in the last
four years,” Rugare Gumbo said.
Mugabe must have very poor
memory indeed if he cannot remember the real hardship of 2000 to 2008; the
last four years were years of plenty in comparison. The country's runaway
inflation was such that the civil servants got a 700%, for example, before
the 2008 elections and within two months the highest paid civil servants were
earning US$30 a month!
Did Mugabe spare a thought for
the 90% who are unemployed; many of them have looking for a job for ten years
or more now! No doubt he did not; his memory cannot grasp anything
more than four years old. They have lived below the poverty datum
line for too long and sunk so deep Mugabe has completely forgotten they ever
existed!
The 90% unemployed have
admittedly forgotten Mugabe too; few of them would have voted for Mugabe.
Of course Mugabe knew that hence the reason why nearly a million Zimbabweans
were denied the vote whilst a few well paid party supporters were allowed
multiple vote to ensure election victory for the tyrant!
The 100% wage increase for the
civil servants will do nothing to save them from the grim reality of
electricity and water shortages, collapsed education and health services, etc.
One quarter of a million cannot be saved from poverty whilst the twelve million
are allowed to drown - the majority will pull the rest the few down with them.
Zimbabwe
needs a leader with a good memory and a matching good eye sight to see the
bigger picture. Mugabe, his cronies and a handful of civil servants cannot
thrive whilst millions live in abject poverty. Mugabe is not that leader and
since he rigged the July elections the more reason the nation must reject him
and have him replaced.

It is sheer hypocrisy on the part of Mugabe to say it was not right that the civil servants were paid low wages these last four years when their wages were even worse in 2008 and beyond when he was in charge. He is also being hypocritical to talk of a living wage for the 230 000 civil servants when 90% of the population do not have a wage at all.
