If 2017 coup was "justified, legal and constitutional", violating an obscure two term limit clause is nothing! W Mukori

Zanu-PF Secretary for Legal Affairs, Patrick Chinamasa, has reaffirmed the ruling party's commitment to pursuing the controversial 2030 agenda aimed at extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa's rule beyond his constitutionally mandated second term, which ends in 2028. Chinamasa stated that the party leadership and structures would persist in their efforts to achieve this goal through the appropriate political and constitutional channels, while also working to persuade Mnangagwa to remain in power.

The continued push for Mnangagwa's extended stay in office escalates tensions within Zanu-PF, further intensifying the succession battle between the President and his deputy, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga. The two factions have been engaged in a growing power struggle, and this latest development is expected to heighten internal divisions within the ruling party.

The 2030 agenda has been met with resistance from various quarters, including some senior Zanu-PF officials who view it as a direct violation of the constitutional two-term limit. However, Mnangagwa's loyalists argue that his leadership remains crucial for the party's continuity and stability, and they are determined to push through constitutional amendments or other legal maneuvers to extend his tenure.

Observers believe that this battle for power could destabilize the party, as Chiwenga, who played a key role in the 2017 coup that ousted Robert Mugabe and brought Mnangagwa to power, is expected to resist any move that undermines his presidential ambitions. The rift between the two leaders has widened in recent months, with both factions consolidating support within the party's key structures.

The succession battle is likely to dominate Zimbabwe's political landscape in the coming years, as both Mnangagwa and Chiwenga's allies strategize and maneuver for control. Meanwhile, opposition parties and civil society groups continue to criticize Zanu-PF's push for an unconstitutional extension of power, warning that it could lead to further political instability in the country.

With Zanu-PF pressing ahead with its 2030 agenda, all eyes are now on Mnangagwa and whether he will publicly endorse the plan or attempt to ease internal tensions within his party. Either way, Zimbabwe's political future remains uncertain as the ruling party's leadership battle reaches a new and potentially volatile phase.

There is nothing Mnangagwa can do to defuse the rift, nothing. He has promised that he will step down as is required by the constitution only to ask his supporters: Why have you stopped the ED2030 bandwagon. He is the one who is desperate to stay in power and who know him well know that.

Why is Mnangagwa so desperate to stay in power? The obvious reason is that he is addicted to power. His love of power burns stronger than normal and, worst of all, he is the one who has never ever hesitated to do whatever he felt necessary to retain power including cold blooded murder. Mugabe loved power but he did not have the black heart to see through such heinous acts as the Gukurahundi massacre and the wanton violence of the 2008 Operation Mavhotera Papi, he left all that to Mnangagwa.

As we can well imagine Mnangagwa has a lot of loot to lose and many skeletons in the artic, basement, mine shafts, etc. to hide. He cannot trust anyone with such wealth and secretes; especial Chiwenga, not after Mnangagwa himself has repeatedly betrayed and ill treated Chiwenga.

To those harping on about Mnangagwa will violate the two term limit if he stated beyond 2028; wake up and smell the humus! Mnangagwa and Zanu PF have done a lot worse things these last 45 years than violate a constitutional clause. Mnangagwa blatantly rigged the 2023 elections, both SADC and AU condemned the process and he publicly dismissed them with contempt.

Chiwenga himself should know the 2017 military coup was a far worse treasonous act than violating the two term limit. High Court George Chiweshe ruled the coup was “justified, legal and constitutional”. Mnangagwa is sure to find a judge who will rule the extending Mnangagwa’s stay beyond 2028 “justified, legal and constitutional”!

If the 2017 military coup was "justified, legal and constitutional", then violating some obscure two term limit clause is NOTHING! Mnangagwa will extend his stay in power beyond 2028 with the usual dismissive indifference. "Muchida musingadi!"

Zimbabwe Light said...

This is just nonsense! Chiwenga has played his part in the Zanu PF murders including Gukurahundi, Operation Mavhotera Papi, the 2017 military coup, firing of the nurses and doctors when he was minister of health, ordered the shooting of 1st August 2018 protestors, etc. Chiwenga is a ruthless dictator, period!

IFZANU PF JUDGED THE 2017 MILITARY COUP TO BE "JUSTIFIED, LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONAL" THE PARTY WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM BRUSHING ASIDE THE TWO TERM LIMIT TO DELIVER ED2030. NONE!

MNANGAGWA CAN AND MUST BE STOPPED BUT WILL PROBABLY STAY IN POWER BEYOND 2028 FOR THE SAME REASONS WE HAVE FAILED TO END THE ZANU PF DICTATORSHIP THESE LAST 45 YEARS AND COUNTING - OUR OWN, OPPOSITION AND ELECTORATE, BREATHTAKING INCOMPETENCE.

@ FADZAYI MAHERE

SHE IS CAMPAIGNING TO REMAIN IN THE PUBLIC EYE TO BETTER HER CHANCES OF WINNING IN THE NEXT ELECTIONS. SHE HAS PARTICIPATED IN FLAWED ELECTIONS KNOWING THAT ZANU PF WAS RIGGING AND PARTICIPATING WILL GIVE THE REGIME LEGITIMACY AND PERPETUATED THE PEOPLE’S SUFFERING. SHE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE SUFFERING MASSES AS LONG AS SHE GETS A SEAT ON THE GRAVY TRAIN!

AS LONG AS THE ELECTORATE REMAIN NAIVE AND GULLIBLE, SO NAIVE THEY ARE EASILY CONNED TO PARTICIPATE IN FLAWED ELECTIONS BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE IDIOTIC LIES OF THE OPPOSITION WINNING RIGGED ELECTIONS; ZIMBABWE WILL NEVER EVER HAVE QUALITY LEADERS. NEVER EVER!

Zimbabwe Light said...

She did participate in the 2023 election knowing that Zanu PF was rigging and participating will give Zanu PF legitimacy. She conned the brain dead supporters to participate and lied about CCC winning. She took up the gravy train seats even after both SADC and AU election observers condemned the election process out of greed. Of course She does not care about the masses’ suffering.

These are the historic fact, they are not opinion, you flatulent nincompoop!!

“It is useless to boycott Elections. Because it will not stop, ZANU PF to go ahead with the Election.

Best move, I support you is to go ahead with elections.”

Has it ever occurred to you why Zanu PF is investing so mush money, energy, sweat and blood in bribing the opposition leaders? Zanu PF has seen to it that the party does not have a clean sweep, the opposition always win a few seats. This is what David Coltart was talking about in his book.

“The (2013) electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility,” confessed David Coltart in his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.

Having enticed the opposition to participate Zanu Pf has rewarded the winning few with all the gravy train trappings, the US$ 60 000 car allowance, generous salary, etc.

In 2018 Mnangagwa went one step further and created POLAD, to reward losing presidential candidate. He imposed a US$20 000 nomination fee for 2023 elections just to stop the flood of presidential candidates!

Chamisa and company have participated in these flawed elections for the same reason Mwonzora, Madhuku, etc. have participated - greed. It is shocking to hear some people wittering endlessly about Chamisa doing the nation a favour participating to stop Mwonzora, etc. winning! How naive!

There is something sickening when a regime makes a big song and dance when it installs a simple thing like a borehole for a community of 500 or so families. Because this is a regime that is holding these rural folk to ransom, keeping them poor and powerless for its own selfish political reasons.

Giving rural folk title deeds to the land on which their mud huts stand will give them the confidence to build decent homes, plant fruit trees, etc. will be one sure step to guarantee economic prosperity of the millions in the rural areas now living in heartbreaking poverty! How infuriating that Zanu PF is holding the nation to ransom!

Zimbabwe Light said...

Participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy and perpetuate the suffering of millions of ordinary people is not a trivial matter. Just remember that!

Zimbabwe Light said...

@ M J

It is naive, to say the least, to suggest that Zanu PF alone is Zimbabwe’s problem. CCC leaders have connived with the regime and conned the people again and again to participate in flawed elections out of greed.

Zanu PF would not still be in power today if MDC leaders had implemented the democratic reforms during the GNU, for example. MDC leaders supported the 2017 coup out of greed and look where that landed the nation!

Not everyone who is in the trenches is fighting to advance the common cause, there are others there for selfish reasons. To fail to realise that individuals like Fadzayi Mahere have sold out in the past and may well do so again is foolish because it shows you have learned nothing from the past.

There are others who consider Chamisa and CCC leaders to be demigods, nothing upset them more than having them questioned. How anyone can consider another mortal a demigod beggars belief. But then that explains why Zimbabwe is a failed state!

"And yet the historic facts remain that one mentally challenged Wiribheti Mukori who masquerade as a member of opposition is always crushing opposition voices. He sees no evil in Zanu pf but sees everything bad in opposition voices. Who are you working for , you expose yourself daily."

CCC leaders participated in the flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy only an idiot would deny historic facts! And I will never be silenced by the idiot calling me "mentally challenged" because I spoke the truth!

@ Gono

The Zanu PF mentality is very strong - anyone who dared to criticise the regime was a puppet of the West. Address the issues raised!

Zimbabwe Light said...

@ Mupandi

All those holding public office are accountable to the people and that means Zanu PF and MDC/CCC leaders. MDC/CCC leaders sold out on implementing reforms, participating in flawed elections. etc. and they must account for it. If that makes me murakashi then I am a murakashi!

The quality of our debate is so shallow, a reflection of the poor IQ of most of our people. You cannot expect some one with the IQ of a garden slug to address the substantive issues such as Zanu PF rigging elections and the opposition conniving in that by failing to implement reforms.

There are many reasons why Zimbabwe is a failed state and one of the reasons is we have millions with an IQ of a slug! "Mukori is a serious murakashi for Zanu PF." Since when has anyone in Zanu PF accused the party of rigging elections and called for free, fair and credible elections?

Zimbabwe Light said...

@ Benjamin

MDC/CCC are sell out and there is a mountain of evidence to prove it, it is therefore unbelievable that anyone with half a brain would still call the likes of Fadzayi Mahere “very principled” woman!

The danger of Chamisa conning these village idiots to participate in yet another flawed election even after 45 years of rigged elections is very much on the cards. You cannot reason with some one whose brain has ossified into fat!

No wonder we are a failed state, we really have some brain dead idiots amongst us , millions of them!

Minister of State for National Security Lovemore Matuke has issued a stern warning to war veterans and other groups planning protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa, declaring that any demonstrations will be swiftly dealt with by security forces.

Disgruntled members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) last week notified police of their intention to stage a protest on March 20. The planned demonstration aims to demand government accountability and highlight Zimbabwe's worsening economic crisis, which the veterans attribute to weak leadership, corruption, and favoritism.

Matuke, who oversees the Central Intelligence Organisation, dismissed the planned protests as mere "social media noise" originating from the diaspora, warning that security forces are fully prepared to respond if demonstrations occur.

Mugabe has brainwashed the war veterans into believing that he and his Zanu PF cronies are the only ones who can be trusted to rule Zimbabwe. The regime even managed to pressure high ranking officials in the state institutions like the Army, Police and CIO who public duty demands that they must be apolitical publicly endorsing the Zanu PF one-party dictatorship ethos.

General Vitalis Zvinavashe, First commander of Zimbabwe Defence Forces, announced that he will not salute anyone with no liberation war credentials. Being State President of Zimbabwe was a “straight jacket!” he insisted.

In other words the people can vote for whoever they like but if the Army and their fellow war veterans friends did not like him/her, they will step in and stop the said candidate taking office. They had the veto.

The people did vote for regime change in 2008, the only time the nation had come close to holding free, fair and credible elections. Mnangagwa with the backing of the Joint Operation Command JOC); a junta comprising of the top brass in the Army, Police, CIO, Prison Services and a few others headed by Mugabe and his assistant Mnangagwa; stopped ZEC announcing the results.

JOC went on to blatantly cheat the vote count and whittled Tsvangirai’s 73% to 47% - enough to force the run-off. During the run-off JOC carried out a military style Operation Mavhotera Papi whose primary purpose was to punish the voters for having dared to reject Zanu PF in the March 2008 vote. Retired and demobilised war veterans were used as the foot soldiers.

Whilst Mugabe and the rest of the Zanu PF leaders have certainly benefited from the war veterans’ blind loyalty to the party and have shown their appreciation by making the veterans feel they are special only a few veterans have enjoyed the economic benefits. Sadly not all war veterans have benefited. All war veterans are equal but some are more equal than others.

Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown due to Zanu PF misrule has meant a lot of fighting over the ever shrinking cake and ever growing poverty. Many of the war veterans have been caught in the growing tide of poverty. And hence the history of war veterans always demanding a handouts from Zanu PF.

When it comes to public protests, Zanu PF has always treated war veterans with kid gloves but once in a while the regime has let loose the riot Police with baton sticks, tear-gas and water cannon. It this what Minister Mature is talking about? Time will tell!

Zanu PF is a party of thugs and the viciousness comes through even when fighting one of their own! He is a war veteran but he was not allowed to speak. If he was opposition he would have lost a lot more than his cap!

You are filthy rich; you have farms, mansions, fleet of posh cars, 45 gold watches, etc., etc.; where did you get all this wealth from? You staged a military coup; was this part of the liberation war values of love and peace?

Chiwenga is just another Zanu PF dictator. To replace Mnangagwa with Chiwenga is as meaningless as a mouse choosing a black mamba or a cobra.

The 2017 coup accomplished nothing because the nation replace one dictator with another. What we needed was to end the dictatorship itself. We must not make the same mistake ever again!

The war veterans press conference disrupted by Zanu PF thugs as the factional war in the party hots up. The war veteran lost his cap to the thug last time Mugabe unleashed the riot Police armed with batons, tear-gas and water cannon - giving the war veterans a taste of what the regime has dished to the rest of us all along.

The war veterans must wake up to the reality swapping one dictator for another is futile. The 2017 swap of Mugabe for Mnangagwa achieved nothing hence we are in this mess again today.

Zimbabweans must reject the false choice of Mnangagwa or Chiwenga. Chiwenga is just another Zanu PF thug and dictator. People must demand the dismantling of the dictatorship itself!

@ Sipho Banana

“Morning all,

May I propose that instead of bashing people and some opposition leaders for their mindsets let’s offer realistic practical alternative solutions to fix what we see as a mindset issue.

There’s no amount of criticism of opposition parties and leaders that will help us deal with the challenges we are facing until we start focusing on creating solutions that address those challenges.”

What is this “opposition mindset”?

Zimbabwe is stuck in this mess for many reasons and one of those reasons is our knack to repeat the same mistakes again and again and again. We have been participating in flawed elections again and again because the people were conned to participate reliving the idiotic lies the opposition would win RIGGED elections.

Chamisa conned millions of his supporters to participate in the 2018 elections telling them “MDC A had stringent measures to stop Zanu PF rigging the elections.” He was lying and was never held to account. And guess what he in 2023 telling the nation he had “plugged all the vote rigging lop holes. #Godisinit!” Of course he was lying again. Any attempt to hold him to account has faced fierce push-back under the pretext it was all criticism and counter productive.

Please tell me how are we going to stop leaders like Chamisa lying about the opposition winning RIGGED elections to conning people into participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy?

Are leaders like Chamisa accountable to anyone? I always thought that for democracy to work ALL those in public office must be accountable to the people.

MDC/CCC leaders have failed to implement even one token reform in 25 years and instead of taking them to task on their failure and betrayals we have a host of nincompoops defending them! They have no clue we are stuck with Zanu PF precisely because MDC/CCC leaders sold out!

We want democracy but do not even know what it means. We want leaders to be held to account but not my Nelson Chamisa because he is a demigod!

No wonder we are a failed state. And at this rate will never be anything else but a failed state, forever blundering from pillar to post!

“That was exactly the point I was trying to get to (though in summary) when I posted that audio. I am not that learned or well informed when it comes to deep political issues, but I think if we start fighting both Zanu & Opposition at the same time, we might lose energy & thus not reach the ultimate goal.”

The people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect MDC/CCC leaders these last 25 years for the express purpose of implementing the democratic changes, reforms, to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. What do you think the “Chinja! Change! Guqula!” were about for Pete’s sake!!

Mnangagwa was able to blatantly rig 2023 elections precisely because MDC/CCC leaders have failed to implement even one token reform. That makes MDC/CCC a problem.

If you want to stop Zanu PF rigging future elections you must first replace MDC/CCC leaders with the men and women who will implement the reforms. Just because Chamisa and company sold out on reforms does not mean we do not require the reforms implemented or that there is no one else who can get the job done!

Of course, it is foolish to keep the sell out opposition leaders and continue participating in flawed elections, believing the idiotic lie of winning RIGGED elections, because “we cannot fight both Zanu PF and the opposition”.

Zimbabwe Light said...

How naive! So you think MDC/CCC leaders were still fighting in the people’s corner when they failed to implement even one token reform during the GNU, for example?

I think this process underscores all set ups be it private or public. I don't know I could be wrong though."

The people of Zimbabwe are the employers but in Zimbabwe Zanu PF thugs are the bosses calling the shots. The people have risked all to elect MDC/CCC leaders into power with the view of forcing Zanu PF thugs to restore the usurped people’s freedoms and rights.

Mugabe bribed Tsvangirai & Co. to forget about the reforms. MDC/CCC leaders will never implement any reforms. They are now working with Zanu PF they con the people to participate in flawed elections to keep up the Zimbabwe is a multi-party state facade and Zanu PF reward them with a few gravy train seats!

It is shocking that after 25 years with not even one token reform implemented some people still continue to believe that MDC/CCC are still fighting in the people's corner. But then it also explains why both Zanu PF and the opposition have conned the people again and again.

Blessed Geza has launched his official X account from which he will communicate with the people. This is not exactly what the people have been waiting for but still, it is a good start. The people were not sure who was the trusted and official source.

The number one issue for Geza and company must now answer is what they are going to do to make sure this revolution is not going to be a repeat of the 2017 coup. Swapping one dictator for another failed to deliver any meaningful change, as we can see.

Zimbabwe's true liberation national heroes and heroines dating back to Mbuya Nehanda must be turning in their graves to see what has become of Zimbabwe!

No matter how noble your vision, be on guard for freeloaders and mafikizolos. They are not stupid but they lack decency, and they will sell your vision down the river. Africa is decolonized today due to the efforts of a few good men. It continues to wallow in poverty due to the actions of charlatans."

The 2017 coup plotters had the "courage to challenge standing dispensations" and they reaped the rewards. I beg to different they had vision other than to maintain the pariah state status. The is a real danger of history repeating itself - not that you will notice any of it (you do not see the folly of 2017 even now with the benefit of hindsight!)
