Worsening economic hardship to test povo resilience - macabre N Garikai

“The turn of the 21st century was not good for Zimbabwe as the country was slapped with illegal sanctions by the west which led to the closure of many industries. Despite going for nearly two decades with no meaningful capital investments coming our way, Zimbabwe did not go down owing to the resilience of its citizens,” wrote Elijah Chihota, a well known Zanu PF apologist.

Ever since former President Robert Mugabe admitted that Zimbabwe was “swindled” of a staggering $15 billion in diamond revenue in 2016; Zanu PF propaganda blaming sanctions for the nation’s economic woes stopped. Everyone knew Mugabe had finally let the cat out of the bag; it was the rampant corruption that was the cancer killing the Zimbabwe economy, not the sanctions.

However, Zanu PF apologists are back to blaming sanctions for the country’s worsening economic meltdown because the regime has failed to deal with the cancerous problem of corruption.

When Mnangagwa seized power a year ago, he promised to end corruption.“There will be zero tolerance to corruption!” he said.

I say Mnangagwa and not President Mnangagwa to underline the fact that he was not elected by the people in the recent elections.

It is now, a year since coming into power and Mnangawgwa has not arrested even one of the diamond swindler and recovered even one dollar of the looted $15 billion. Worse still, the diamond mining is still taking place under the same conditions; i.e. the looting is still going on to this day.

Mnangagwa, just like Mugabe before him, cannot stamp out corruption because he is corrupt himself.

One has to be really naive to believe Mugabe’s Blue Roof mansion was built with money from “Zanu PF membership subscriptions,” as George Charamba once claimed. Charamba would have us believe that all Mugabe’s other amassed wealth and lavish lifestyle were all paid for from the generosity of impoverished party members.

Mnangagwa is one of the wealthiest individual in Zimbabwe. He was named by the UN as one of the Zimbabwe leaders who looted wealth from DRC. So Charamba can spare us another one of his hen’s teeth nonsense.

Mnangagwa cannot tell those around him to stop looting; they will remind him of his own amassed wealth and tell him to his face that they are playing catch-up!

Yes, Chihota, Zimbabwe has been starved of meaningful investment for the last 20 years but not because of targeted sanctions against some Zanu PF leaders. The investment dried up long before the sanctions were imposed. Investors, local and foreign, do not like doing business in a country where corrupt is rampant and there is economic chaos and no rule of law.

38 years of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption have taken a heavy toll on the Zimbabwe economy, it is in ruins. Unemployment has soared to 90%, basic services such as health care and supply of clean water have collapsed, etc. 75% of our people now live on US$1.00 or less a day.

Zimbabweans are the poorest nation in the poorest continent on earth!

“Zimbabwe did not go down owing to the resilience of its citizens!” says Chihota. So, did Zanu PF destroy the nation’s economy to test the people’s resilience?

Are we to understand then that Zanu PF is performing some macabre experiment to establish how much economic hardship and political oppression ordinary Zimbabweans can endure without staging mass protests. On the other hand the ruling elite are granting themselves absolute power and all the influence and wealth it brings, to tested if there is no limit of their insatiable appetites! How convenient!

Chihota, Zimbabwe has gone down! Which part of “75% of our people are living on US$1.00 or less a day” do you, Chihota, and your Zanu PF masters failing to understand!!!

The root cause why Zimbabwe has a government that cares about the selfish interests of the few ruling elite and does not care about the suffering and deaths of ordinary citizens is because the ruling elite have a political voice and the people have none.

“The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures,” reads Section 21 subsection 3 the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

This is not the case in Zimbabweans; for the last 38 years, Zanu PF has blatantly rigged elections and we, the people, have allowed the regime to get away with it. This has set a bad and dangerous precedence; one we must put right, much more so now given the nation’s very survival is at stake if we fail.

Mnangagwa and his junta rigged the recent elections, they have no mandate to govern and therefore they must be forced to step down. As long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state ruled by corrupt and  vote rigging toads the country’s economic meltdown will only get worse.

Zanu PF thugs have held this nation to ransom for the last 38 years, this must come to an end now! Mnangagwa et al must step down, that is not negotiable!

Chamisa booted Gutu out of MDC Alliance tent - his revenge, pissing in P Garamatunhu

It is no secret that Obert Gutu’s departure from the MDC Alliance was not a harmonious one. He joined up with Thokozani Khupe, another one who refused to join the proposed coalition, to form the MDC-T faction. Sadly the faction performed badly in the 30 July 2018 elections and Obert Gutu is not one to quietly lick his wounds.

Gutu has revelled  that he and fellow MDC ministers in the 2008 GNU purchased their official vehicles for less than $ 4  000.

His former MDC colleagues are furious and have been accusing him selling out to Zanu PF.

"I have never been a Zanu PF supporter all my life. I am resolutely pro-Zimbabwe and against retrogressive politics. I will continue to fearlessly and resolutely defend and uphold what's good for Zimbabwe, not necessarily what's good for certain political personalities." Gutu has hit back.

It was USA President Lyndon Baines Johnson who said “I’d rather have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in!” He was answering why he had not sacked Edgar J Hoover. It was no secret the two were not best friends.

Chamisa will wish he had kept Gutu in the MDC Alliance tent because, knowing Obert Gutu as I do, he will pissing into the Alliance on a regular basis! What makes Gutu’s revelation so damaging and pernicious is that they are factual and true!

There are several important lessons for us, ordinary Zimbabweans, to learn from Gutu’s belated confessions, I will just focus on three:

1. Our politicians are so utterly corrupt and incompetent that even after their Soul on the road to Damascus revelation they cannot help but revert back to their primeval default setting of lying.

Obert Gutu had just confessed that he and others had been seduced by Mugabe’s bribes hence the reason they failed to implement even one democratic reforms. The next minute he is wittering about him being “resolutely pro-Zimbabwe”. Mr Obert Gutu, you and your fellow MDC friends were NOT being “resolutely pro-Zimbabwe” when you allowed yourselves to be seduced by Mugabe’s bribes and failed to implement even one democratic reform in five years!

In other words, there is nothing permanent about Mr Gutu’s Damascene moment, it is not the same Soul to Paul transformation of the Bible, but rather that of a chameleon changing colour to blend with its new surrounding. If Gutu was still in the MDC Alliance tent he would be vigorously denying MDC leaders betrayed the nation during the GNU just as he had before he was booted out.

Indeed, if he was to find himself in the new GNU he will once again forget about implementing the reforms just as readily as he did in 2008 to 2013! He knows that Chamisa and other will do the same and if they left him out of the new GNU, he will have his revenge.

2. MDC leaders and members alike have lashed out at Gutu not because they did not buy the ministerial cars at give away prices. They angry with Gutu for admitting it and thus showing them for the corrupt and incompetent individuals they are. Everyone with half a working brain knew MDC leaders sold out during the GNU, the leaders do not want this to be publicly and widely known because MDC’s continued popularity depends on keeping the masses ignorant of such facts.

Mugabe knew MDC leaders are corrupt and incompetent and exploited that to the full. He and his party cronies even boasted about. “Mazivanhu eMDC adzidza kudya anyerere!” (MDC people have learned to enjoy the trappings of high office, they will never rock the boat!)

3. Last but most important of all, many Zimbabweans have refused, even now with the benefit of hindsight, to accept that Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends are corrupt and incompetent and sold-out in failing to implement the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections.

Mugabe bribed the MDC leaders with generous salaries and allowances, $4 million Highlands mansion for Tsvangirai, a former white-owned farm for Welshman Ncube, ministerial limos, etc., etc. In return, the MDC leaders kicked the democratic reforms into the prickly pear thicket.

Of course, Tsvangirai et al did not care about the common people nor the dire consequences of failing to dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship. We are the ones who are stuck with the corrupt, tyrannical and vote rigging Zanu PF dictatorship and are suffering these dire consequences of it.

Zimbabweans have failed to see MDC leaders for whom they really are: corrupt and incompetent even with all the evidence of their blatant selling-out during the GNU. It was the same shortsightedness that resulted in Zimbabweans taking over 20 years before many of them finally accept Zanu PF was a party of corrupt, incompetent and ruthless thugs.

The root cause of this collective myopic is because Zimbabweans are not paying attention to detail. Our understand of issues is superficial, potato skin deep, at best. Many Zimbabweans have no clue what democratic reforms the nation has been dying for are, for example.

MDC supporters have been clamouring for change "Chinja Maitiro! Maitiro Chinja! Guqula Izenzo! Izenzo Guqula!” The majority have no idea what changes they want and hence the reason they are blissfully unaware their leaders sold-out on this very issue during the GNU.

If we are serious about wanting a democratic, just and prosperous Zimbabwe then we must do our homework and  pay meticulous attention to detail. A healthy and functional democracy demands an informed and diligent electorate and not one that will sheepish follow a corrupt and murderous dictator for decades only to follow a corrupt and incompetent sell-out next!

Chiwenga to oversee doctor strike negotiations - Merry Xmas VP, you filthy animal! N Garikai

“Vice President Constantino Guvheya Nyikadzino Chiwenga has taken over the oversight role on the negotiations between government  and striking doctors,” reported Bulawayo 24.

Most people would remember the bully-boy tactics Chiwenga used earlier this year to end the nurses’ strike - he fired the lot! He accused the opposition of being behind the strike and, as we all know, once Zanu PF has give you the opposition supporter tag you are “meat for vultures!” (Nyama yamagoro!), as one would say in Shona.

The junior doctors will probably be spared the MDC tag, for now, but will go away with little else. They will never ever be paid a living wage by this Zanu PF government not as long as the economic meltdown continues to get worse which is exactly what is happening.

There is no hope of any meaningful economic recovery whilst the country remains a pariah state rule by corrupt and vote rigging thugs. None!

It is not so much that government is broke; but that it is broke because corruption is rampant, amongst other reasons. A year ago Mnangagwa promised to end corruption, “there will be zero tolerance on corruption”, he said. Zimbabwe was “swindled $15 billion in diamond revenue” Mugabe admitted in 2016; confirming that corruption is indeed Zimbabwe’s greatest challenge!

And yet, surprisingly after a whole year in power, Mnangagwa has failed to arrest even one of these diamond swindlers. We know the mining has continued and so has the looting. It is not that the nation does not those who have been robbing the nations blind; everyone knows them from their amassed wealth.

VP Chiwenga has his C&M mansion, 45 gold watches, fleet of posh cars, farms, houses, business interests, etc.! It was not all paid for from his ZDF Commander’s salary, that is obvious.

President Mnangagwa is himself believed to be one of the richest individuals in Zimbabwe. He was one of the senior Zimbabwe leaders accused by the UN of looting DRC diamonds and gold. He has maintained a stone faced silence over the matter; the same stone faced silence that he has kept when confronted with evidence of his Gukurahundi murders.

What most Zimbabweans, these striking junior doctors, nurses and teachers amongst them, have failed to appreciate is that Zimbabwe’s economic recovery will never ever happen as long as the country remains a pariah state ruled by corrupt and vote rigging thugs. In other words these junior doctors should have been out demanding that the implementation of the democratic reforms to ensure the recent elections were free, fair and credible.

Now that we know Zanu PF blatantly rigged the 30 July 2018 elections; the junior doctors should not be demanding “a living wage and better conditions of services”. What is the point of asking for something that will never come; we have just forfeited all hope for meaningful economic recovery. Instead, they should be demanding that Zanu PF step down.

For the last 38 years the majority of Zimbabweans have failed to see this political and economic linkage, the few who did have ignored it, and the nation has paid dearly for it. The country is in this mess of economic meltdown and dysfunctional political system because for 38 years the nation has been stuck with a corrupt and tyrannical regime that rigged elections to stay in power.

Indeed, the economic meltdown is now so bad it has pushed unemployment to the nauseating height of 90%, most basic services such as health care and supply of clean running water have all but collapsed, etc. 75% of the country’s population now live on US$1.00 or less a day! There is a limit to how much more of these economic hardships the people of Zimbabwe can take.

We should be taking steps right now to stop Zimbabwe’s worsening economic meltdown and not test providence by pushing the people’s economic hardship endurance to its limit. If we wait for the people’s bottled anger to finally burst, it will unleash a tsunami that will sweep away the Zanu PF dictatorship, but a lot more beside!

Zimbabwe is now standing right up on the very edge of the precipitous abyss. It is important that the nation stop dead and slowly move back.

VP Chiwenga and his fellow Zanu PF thugs are the root cause of the nation’s economic and political mess; whether they care to admit it or not, that is academic. What is of immediate concern right now, is that they step down; they rigged the recent elections and so they have no mandate to govern. They continued stay in power will only mean the economic meltdown will get worse and thus push the nation over the edge into the abyss.

Besides, even if the people were to bite their lower lip and endure the worsen economic meltdown as stoically as they can for the next five years; there is no reason to believe their suffering will end then. If Zanu PF is still in power in 2023, we can be 100% certain the regime will rig those elections just as readily as it rigged this year’s elections.

Zimbabweans have allowed Zanu PF rig elections and to stay in power in the hope that next time the regime will, out of some Damascene transformative experience, keep its promise to hold free, fair and credible elections. This has gone on for the last 38 years and Zanu PF has blatantly rigged the elections time and time again. After all these years of being disappointed, it is insane to try this futile course of action one more day especially with the nation’s very survival now at stake.

So, if these junior doctors had their thinking caps on, the only demand they would be asking of VP Chiwenga is for him and his fellow Zanu PF junta to step own. There is as much hope of Junior Doctors getting Zanu PF to step down as turkeys getting a Christmas break!

The junior doctors will probably be offered a 20% pay rise (to much what the Army got a few month ago) on their current pay of $384 per month! Paid in Bond Notes and not the US$ the doctors are demanding. Government will pretend the Bond Notes have held their value against the US$ at the official exchange rate of 1:1. We all know in the real world the exchange rate swung from 3:1 to as high as 10:1 to the US$.

In other words the junior doctors wages have dropped from US$ 384.00 to US$ 128.00 and then US$ 38.40 a month. The 20% increase will take their wages to US$153.60 and $46.08! At the height of the 2008 hyperinflation, junior doctors wages shrunk way below US$1.00 a month! Everyone knows those 500 billion per cent inflation rates and empty shop shelves days are here already, we have not yet hit the high notes but will do so soon enough!

No wonder the regime wants a ruthless enforcer like VP Chiwenga overseeing the salary negotiations; the junior doctors will remember what happened to the striking nurses and take their huge and bitter wage cut pill without further ado - orally or otherwise.

“Merry Christmas VP Chiwenga! You filthy animal!” He will not  hear the latter; only flies with their ears to the ground will hear it!
