Echoes from the past - Zim economy is dying and yet Chinamasa tell Dubai of "unlocked" potential!

Zimbabwe’s national economy is on its death bed with 18 000 workers laid off in three weeks and thousands more to follow and Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa tells would be investors in Dubai he has “unlocked” Zimbabwe’s investment potential. This has echoes of Joseph Goebbels’ “Nazi victory” speech with Russians, a few blocks away, to deliver the coup de grace!

Zimbabwe has failed to attract any Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for years now because of the country’s failure to address basic economic problems like mismanagement and corruption. No one would want to invest in a country whose economy was groaning under the burden of mismanagement and corrupt. Whatever little investment the country had enjoyed until then turned into a trickle in 2000 when the regime instituted its infamous seizure of white owned farms in contemptuous disregard of property ownership rights.

The trickle of FDI dried up completely when the regime followed the farm seizure with the passing of the Indigenisation Law in 2008 forcing all foreign investor with business equity valued at $ 500 000 or more to sell 51% of the shares to a local Zimbabwean(s).

After rigging the July 2013 national elections Mugabe was sure rigging economic recovery would be a walk in the park. He was told a thousand times there would be no economic recovery until measures were taken to end, by then, gross mismanagement and rampant corruption and the obnoxious Indigenisation law was scrapped. He has done nothing confident that his very ambitious $27 billion ZimAsset plan would deliver the recovery.

Ever since the rigged elections Mugabe and his ministers have criss-crossed the world begging for money to finance his ZimAsset plan. He has failed to get anyone, not even his “all weather friends”, the Chinese and Russians, would bankroll his hare-brain scheme. The Chinese have told him they would finance “bankable projects” only, he wanted open ended budgetary support.

By the end of last year, 2014, and without a single dollar in his ZimAsset begging bowl; Mugabe finally accepted that his ZimAsset plan was died and with it his hope of economic recovery.

For the last two years the Zimbabwe economy has been die a slow but painful death with reports of more and more companies closing down and throwing their workers on the Mount Everest high unemployment rate of 90% plus and the government failing to raise enough revenue to pay its own workers let alone pay for anything else. The economic meltdown was real and socially and politically unsustainable; government urged again and again to bite the bullet and implement the required economic reforms but again and again has ignored the warning.

The laying off of 18 000 workers in three weeks at a time when government has directed parastatals to lay off workers and on its part government itself talking of its wage bill from 83% to 40% of collected revenue by laying off workers and/or reducing their wages. The economic decline is now accelerating because the significant drop in demand of goods and services cause by all these laid-off workers will trigger yet another wave of company closure and lay-offs.

If the national economy had been gasping for breath in the last six months the events of the last three weeks show things are now a lot worse, the national economy is coughing blood!

So with the national economy on its death bed, it really does not make any sense that the Minister of Finance, the nation’s chief economist, should be travelling to distant lands to lure investors to invest in Zimbabwe. The country has done absolutely nothing to address the underlying causes of the economic meltdown which is why investors have shied away all these years. These would be investors would know Zimbabwe’s a no-go country for investors and the situation will be even worse now with the national economy on its death bed.

Please someone tell me the story that Finance Minister is travelling to Dubai to woo investors is not true!

“Finance Minister, Patrick Chinamasa, is today expected to fly out to Dubai to court global investors at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ)'s Winter School, where he has accepted to be the key note speaker,” The Financial Gazette and Bulawayo 24 reported.

The conference theme: "Expanding horizons, elevating minds - Unlocking Zimbabwe's tourism and investment potential", with the aim of showcasing Zimbabwe as a viable tourist and investment destination.

It the dying days of the Second World War, with the Russians literally blocks away from Adolf Hitler’s bunker, Paul Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda, gave a staring rallying address to new Nazi recruits drafted to join the army to fight for the fatherland and victory. History has the habit of repeating itself.

Finance Minister Chinamasa will be remembered as the minister whose failure to implement any meaningful economic reforms, even when it was abundantly clear without the reforms economy was doomed, took the national economy over the precipice. And with the national economy on its death bed Chinamasa, like Goebbels, still insisted that he had unlocked Zimbabwe’s investment potential!

Pray the final demise of Zanu PF is now near upon us and that the tyrannical regime is not going to drag the nation any deeper as it sinks into the abyss!

@ Mujombo

To argue that only Tsvangirai and Mutambara could have implemented the reforms is a shocking display of your own ignorance of how the parliamentary system works and the naive acceptance of leaders as Gods whose decisions must never be questioned.

There is no shred of evidence that any one in MDC tried to get even one reform implemented and there is only two possible explanation why that was so. One, the individual did not know about the reforms and/or failed to appreciate their importance in which case the individual is breathtakingly incompetent and has no business being an MP!

Two, the individual understood the importance of the reforms but did not want to risk Mugabe's anger now that the tyrant had allowed them a seat on the gravy train. In which case the individual is corrupt and a sold-out.

Both Ncube and Biti definitely know about the reforms since the two were actively involved in the drafting of the GPA. So the only reason they too did not lift a finger for five years to get at least one reform implemented is because as Ministers they were certainly very gratiful to Mugabe and the two joined the others in singing Mugabe's praises during the GNU.

Implementing the reforms was the key to ending the Zanu PF dictatorship and hence the reason why all MDC leaders who failed to get this task done must resign. If these should not resign over a serious matter like this then I really do not see when they should!

People like you have such a shallow understanding of the issues and yet are foolish enough to dogmatically hold on to a point of view even when there is a mountain of evidence to prove you are wrong. Not even one reform was implemented, that is a historic fact and both Ncube and Biti will never deny that they had the opportunity to implement the reforms but did not because they were "too busy enjoying the benefits of being in the GNU" as SADC leaders have said. So what other evidence do you need to convince you the two are corrupt?

You do not accept that Ncube and Biti are corrupt because you are too incompetent to comprehend the evidence before you. The fact that you are a simpleton who will never comprehend the truth does not change the truth or the facts on the ground.

Mugabe cannot ditch the indigenisation law without losing face since he has used the law too often for too long for prove his anti-white rhetoric. Even if he was to bite the bullet and scrap the law tomorrow, no one will believe him because he has gone back on his word so many times only a fool would believe that Mugabe can ever be trusted to keep his word.

Like it or not the only way Zimbabwe can restore investor confidence now it if a new government elected in free and fair elections scrapped the indigenisation law, etc.

@ Patrick

The political challenge is not so much of you and me ignoring of MDC's distractions but rather of getting the naïve and gullible electorate to ignore these distractive MDC gimmicks!

Before the 2013 elections MDC promised the voters that the elections would be free and fair and the people believed them. It was tough to get the people to listen to the arguments why the elections will not be free and fair. And so when the elections were rigged the people were confused but could not hold MDC to account over the matter because they never understood that MDC had in fact lied.

Many Zimbabweans are very simple people whose understand of issues is, at best, superficial, very thing is taken at face value.

So when MDC came up with their "No reform no election." after the rigged July 2013 elections people accepted the move and did not see it as a gimmick. They would have seen it as a gim-mick if they had remembered that MDC had lied that the elections would be free and fair.

Now, hardly six months later, MDC is abandoning its call to boycott of elections but once again it is water off the duck's back because they hardly understood why MDC was boycotting the elections anywhere!

Each time MDC present one of their gimmicks the electorate are swept off their feet with excitement it is near impossible to engage such an excitable and naive electorate into a meaningful discussion on anything. We are not going to get out of this political and economic hell as long as we have a naive and gullible electorate whose understand of issues is so superficial they are easily blow one way and the other but the cheapest of political gimmicks going.

The EU renews its demand for the release of Itai Dzamara.

Mugabe was caught between the hard rock and the deep blue sea on Dzamara: his defiant demand for Mugabe to go could not be ignore for fear more people would join him. On the other hand there was always a risk that punishing him in anyway would only help draw attention to him.

By abducting Dzamara, the regime has turned him into a martyr!

The voices of those demanding the release of Dzamara are only going to grow louder until the regime release him or resign!

@ Akapondwa Kare

The EU is not wasting its time or energy reminding the regime that this is one issue that is not going to be swept under the carpet. The longer the regime fails to do some on this matter the bigger the issue will become! Watch and learn my friend, watch and learn!

Yes Mugabe has used violence to stay in power but it must be said that the poor quality of the opposition has helped extend Mugabe’s stay in State House.

Take Joseph Makamba Busha the leader of Free Zimbabwe Congress who is aspiring to be president after 2018 elections, for example, here is just another mediocre and confused no-body. Mugabe did not use terror to win the 2013 elections as he did in the 2008 run-off presidential election for example; the tyrant has moved on and so should you.

Mr Busha is just another Morgan Tsvangirai, he does not a clue what needs to be done here to end the Zanu PF dictatorship; all he is hoping for take advantage of the people’s desperation for change and be elected and thus get a seat on the gravy train.

Having an electorate that is naïve and gullible, naïve and gullible enough to elect someone as corrupt and incompetent as Tsvangirai, has thrown the political door wide open. Even village idiot with nothing to offer other than that they are not Robert Mugabe are throwing their hat in; they too are hoping to claim a seat on the gravy train. 28 political parties contested the 2013 elections; no doubt there will be as many if not even more in the 2018 elections.

Mr Busha the last elections were lost because MDC failed to implement the democratic reforms. If you and your FZC supporters have failed to comprehend this simple political fact then there can be no doubt that Mugabe and Zanu PF will “win” the next elections!

The economic situation in Zimbabwe has reached new level, the people are so desperate they will vote for anyone but what the people have failed to factor in is that not everyone is smart enough to stop Mugabe and Zanu PF denying the people a meaningful vote and rigging the elections. And the regime has developed many subtle ways of rigging the vote other than the blatant use of violence!

other than Douglas Mwonzora who led from the front in the selling of this rubbish; his motor-mouth went into overdrive then.

It must be said that the quality, or in MDC's cases the lamentable lack of quality, is a reflection of the quality of the party membership. MDC had the numbers to win the 2013 elections the party lost because Zanu PF rigged the vote but it was because MDC had done nothing to stop the vote rigging. MDC membership should have been furious with the party leaders for this, they are not because they have failed to comprehend what happened - that says volumes about the quality of the MDC membership, absolutely lamentable!

@ mukaranga

"We can only vote for those who have the guts to come out in the open and fight the dictator-ship," you said.

Well said if this was 1999 or 2008 at the latest when people believed MDC had guts and they will deliver the democratic changes as promised. MDC had the golden opportunities to implement the reforms and the changes we all been fighting for. They failed to get even one reform implemented in five years in the GNU. Not one!

We also know why they failed; Mugabe bribed them to do nothing about the reforms. Tsvangirai got the $4 million Highlands mansion as part of his sweetener. MDC sold out that is a historic fact.

Of course there are some MDC supporters who are totally incapable of accepting facts and the truth of MDC leaders being corrupt and incompetent just as there are Zanu PF supporters who have refused to accept that Mugabe is a corrupt and murderous tyrant.

Zimbabwe is in this hell hole because, as a nation, we have the great misfortune of having more than our fair share of mentally challenged individuals - you are one of these mentally challenged Zimbabweans. The real debate the nation should be having is about how the nation is going to get out of this hell.

Instead of concentrating on this we are wasting time defending the indefensible, corrupt and incompetent leaders who have already proven so beyond all reasonable doubt! But given we have mentally challenged people- that is to be expected.

Vince, Mnangagwa didnot not just admit that the nation is 20 years behind but in his usual myopic arrogance believes that was an achievement and that Zanu PF is still the only party competent to rule the nation going forward.

He is confident he will get the nation out of this mess and worse still will continue to deny the nation a say in this since he has every intention to rig the next elections as the regime has done in the past!

Such is our curse of in having a tyrannical regime in power; getting Zanu PF to implement any reforms, our only chance to stop the party rigging future elections is not gong to be easy. We had our best chance to implement the reforms and MDC wasted that chance! Now we have to figure how to do is from scratch!

Mnangagwa was in China begging for ZimAsset funding and the Chinese have reportedly told him they will not give Zimbabwe another dollar until the nation repays the $1.5 billion it has borrowed already!

ZimAsset is dead and Mugabe can bury it at hero's acre or wherever he pleases, what matters is that it is dead! I wonder whether Mugabe will give another 2 hour speech over this new fallen comrade, ZimAsset in two days time!

The Chinese are refusing to give Zimbabwe further funding for exactly the same reason the IMF and WB have given. Mugabe has never stopped accusing the West of destroying Zimbabwe’s economy by imposing sanctions is the tyrant going to accuse the Chinese too of imposing sanctions on him?
