Mnangagwa, jacaranda will bloom regardless of the rigged elections, the economy will not - mark my words

President Mnangagwa’s falsehoods and damned lies in the Guardian (UK) newspaper cannot go unchallenged.

“September is the first month of spring in Zimbabwe. The jacaranda trees that line Harare's avenues will soon flower into a sea of purple. Last November their blossom formed the backdrop to the people taking to the streets and demanding change,” started Mnangagwa.

The jacaranda trees have bloomed without failure throughout the years of white colonial oppression just as they have bloomed throughout the years of corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF oppression that followed. Yes the people of Zimbabwe were very pleased to see Robert Mugabe finally forced out of office; they had to be eternally grateful for even this little mercy.

Of course, it was a little mercy because no one, other than the very naïve and gullible, were under any illusion the November coup was about removing the top dog in the Zanu PF dictators and a handful of others around him but only to replace Mugabe with another dictator, Emmerson Mnangagwa, “mark 2 Mugabe”, as UK MP Kate Hoey called him.

The real acid test of whether the November coup had ushered in real democratic change in Zimbabwe was the elections. Mark 2 Mugabe promised to hold free, fair and credible elections but no serious political analyst believed him and events have since confirmed they were right.

The President described the elections as “the freest and fairest in our history”. This is just typical of those who do not want a serious debate on a subject; instead of focusing on the elections must be free, fair and credible we are on to superlatives!

Yes, this year’s elections were the “freest and fairest” compared to the 2008 and 2013 elections which were marred by some of the worst cases of wanton violence ever. It should be noted that it was none other than Emmerson Mnangagwa and most of those involved in the November putsch were behind all the harassment, destruction of property, beatings, rapes and even cold blooded murders that took place.

This year the junta instructed its operatives to take their foot off the violence pedal and concentrated on reminding the voters that the violence of 2008 and 2013 will return if Zanu PF should lose these elections, “operation harvest fear” as some people have called it.

If we judge these elections on what is international accepted standards for free and fair elections then this year’s elections were flawed and illegal. President Mnangagwa does not want us to consider these standard but to focus instead on the violence and be grateful the junta’s thugs were kept on the leash!

Of course, this year’s elections were not free, fair and credible. How can they be otherwise when there was no free public media, 2 to 3 million Zimbabweans in the diaspora were denied the vote, ZEC failed to produce a clean and verified voters’ roll throwing the door open to multiple voting, etc., etc.

Just two months before this year’s July elections, President Mnangagwa gave an interview with UK based Economist Magazine in which he flatly denied that Zanu PF rigged the 2008 elections. “Where is the evidence of vote rigging!” he maintained. He is still in denial that Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by vote rigging thugs.

“In the absence of readily available evidence (of vote rigging), it served only to polarise voters. Those who had believed the opposition leader's claims had to do so in blind faith. Without such faith, it is difficult to see where this fraud came from,” argue President Mnangagwa.

Not even one of the national or multinational organizations from respectable democratic nations who send their team to observe Zimbabwe’s elections have yet released their report on the elections, it is now six weeks since voting day. Their silence is ominous and, no doubt, President Mnangagwa’s “where is the evidence” is the pre-emptive defence. He is hiding behind a finger!

The investors and lenders whose help Zimbabwe needs to kick start its comatose economy are a shrewd and savvy lot, they are smart enough to see that these elections were rigged. They will continue to shy away from investing in Zimbabwe.

The jacaranda trees blossomed year after year without failure throughout Mugabe’s corrupt and tyrannical reign whilst the national economy wilted and collapsed. President Mnangagwa, you can be certain that the jacaranda trees will blossomed once again this year but not the economy, the economic meltdown is set to continue. Jacaranda trees do not care whether it is Mugabe or Mugabe mark 2 ruling the country; investors and lenders care a great deal hence the reason the economy is in a mess and is not going to recover.

President Mnangagwa, the jacaranda trees will bloom regardless of Zanu PF having blatantly rigged this year's elections as it has done so often in the past. What do trees care about such matters. However, investors and lenders care a great deal about these matters, they do not do business with vote rigging thugs. So the jacaranda trees will bloom but not the economy, it will continue to wilt!

"Where is the evidence the elections were rigged!" you argue.

Do you really think the investors are that naive they would believe an election in which the authorities fail to produce something as basic as a verified voters' roll can ever be judged free, fair and credible! You are the one who is naive!

"The issue is Mnangagwa did not win the elections," said MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa on Saturday

Of course, Zanu PF blatantly rigged the elections. Chamisa was warned this would happened but refused to listen. "MDC has stringent measures to stop vote rigging!" he said. So what happened to the stringent measures?

This is not the first time MDC leaders have dragged the nation into flawed and illegal elections and, unless people open their eyes and finally see Chamisa and company for the corrupt, incompetent and sell-outs they are, it will not be the last time. A naive and gullible electorate is a curse to any nation!

MDC was warned not to go into the elections without first implementing the democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. This is not the first time the party was warned of this, they were warned before the 2013 election. The party did not listen then and it did not listen now.

"MDC has stringent measures to stop Zanu PF rigging elections!" Chamisa insisted. Now we know he was talking nonsense as usual.

“When I am sworn in, I will take my own way and Mnangagwa will take his and we will see who the real leader is,” now Chamisa tells us.

“There is no stability out of a rigged election, there is no economic confidence and certainty.

“Mnangagwa is a sun which is setting, I am the sun which is rising and the setting sun must give way to the rising sun for the benefit of the country to move forward."

Whilst it is true that there is no political stability or economic recovery after these rigged elections, it must be said the country would have been spared all this if MDC leaders had not proven to be incompetent, corrupt and sell-outs. As for Chamisa being sworn in this is just the usual nonsense and posturing!

@ Zii Masiye

The trouble with those who are totally incapable of looking at life beyond the simplistic me-here-and now, who cannot see anything beyond the superficial, is that they are easily bowled over.

Emmerson Mnangagwa was Mugabe's right-hand man who helped the tyrant impose a ruthless, corrupt and vote rigging de facto one party state that has lasted nearly four decades now. In staging the November coup Mnangagwa has just breathed new life into the dictatorship which was being torn up by the endless fighting for power that had broken out in the last four years.

Zanu PF under Mnangagwa is the same ruthless, corrupt and vote rigging dictatorship of Mugabe days as the recent election have just shown. Mnangagwa promised to hold free and fair elections and yet used the same tried and tested vote rigging tricks of the past to blatantly rig the elections. Those who cannot see beyond the superficial failed to see even the obvious. ZEC failed to produce a verified voters' roll, something as basic as that, and yet many still believed the elections were free, fair and credible.

"The daring political somersault that saw the wily "Crocodile" abandon the brazen arrogance of dynastic power and foolhardy display of bareknuckle dictatorship that so characterised his mentor and master, Robert Mugabe; the dare-devil willingness to open up, to embrace change and the borrowed robes of unfettered consensus-building democracy has been as spell-binding a spectacle as it was incredible," you say.

How naïve! Mnangagwa has not changed one bit; unless you call dressing the iron fist with a velvet glove change!

"And on Thursday, the former President told mourners that the nation must rally behind President Mnangagwa, saying his election victory in the July 30 harmonised elections legitimised his leadership," you say.

"The remarks by the ex-president were buttressed by his wife, Grace, who said they would pray for President Mnangagwa as his leadership was God-given."

This is just nonsense coming out from the old ruthless dictator. Mnangagwa blatantly rigged the elections and, per se, it is nonsensical to talk of "elections legitimised" Mnangagwa. But we should not be surprise to hear this coming from the man whose own long stay in power was on the back of rigged elections!

Zimbabwe is stuck in this hell-on-earth situation because for the last 38 years the nation has failed to hold free, fair and credible elections, the pre-requisite for a legitimate and competent government. Until we cure ourselves of this scourge of rigged elections, the country will never get out of this hell-hole.

Mugabe is very pleased with Mnangagwa now that the latter has shown there will be expense spared to maintain their luxurious lifestyles they had become used to when the tyrant ruled the roost! As for Zimbabwe's well-being, free and fair elections, etc. the former tyrant does not give a damn and never did!
