Metamorphosis of hero to mercenary is not subtle but bold

Today 10 August is National Heroes Day, a day put aside for the nation to remember its fallen and those still very much with us heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle and of the other trials and tribulations of life. My childhood heroine and that of everyone in my village was VaMudisi.

Even to this day I remember my step-grandmother with her head always wrapped loosely in a large cloth two or three inches thick; much the same way one would wrap a light bulb whose glass is so thin and delicate a slight pressure or shock will shutter the glass. She had migraine headaches and when she was having one of the attaches, which was only too frequent for her, the woman was stop whatever she was doing sit down cross-legged with her head bowed low.

She had been to see specialist in Hospitals, tried every religious and traditional healers from near and far but all to no avail. Whilst other women in the village would carry the clay pot of water or bundles of firewood on their heads; my step-grandmother never ever carried anything on her head. She avoided anything that could trig another headache.

One day she had a visitor, vaMudisi; a little known traditional healer from a village a day or so walk from our village, she said she could cure migraine headaches. My step-grandmothers had tried everyone else so why no, she agreed to try vaMudisi’s roots and tree bark brew. Within days she did not need her elaborate head gear and by the end of the week she was carrying bundles of firewood on her head!

Everybody in the village was so pleased and none more so than my grandfather; he offered vaMudisi a heifer in payment for her service. It was a generous offer considering that the going price for specialist services like midwife was a goat if the new mother was from a rich family or a chicken if she was from a poor family. VaMudisi said no. My grandfather increased the price to two heifers and still she said no.

“Mbuya (grandmother) is my grandmother too!” explained vaMudisi.

A great meal was prepared of rice-meal sadza (thick porridge) and chicken in peanut butter sauce, a real and rare treat in our village, to celebrate the curing of the migraine headache. When vaMudisi left she was given several bags of maize, ground nuts plus a goat; my grandfather had learnt that her family was poor and had little to eat.

VaMudisi was to become a regular visitor in our village. She was in the neighbourhood and thought she would drop by to see “Murwere wangu!” (My patient!), referring to my step-grandmother. She would stay for a week or even two weeks and would nag about how she has missed some of that rice-meal sadza and chicken in peanut butter sauce. When she finally left she would again bags of grain.

As far as vaMudisi was concerned my step-grandmother was never cured of her migraine headache because she insisted in calling her “Murwere wangu”. And she exercised the doctor’s right to visit her patient as often, stay as long and bring along whoever she pleased. She would visit with her husband and two or three of their children. She visited two or three times a year and this went on for some time.

VaMudisi and her family were poor but only because they were lazy. My grandfather was rich, by our village’s standards anyway, because he worked hard. He and his wife were the type who prayed for good rains and earned a rich harvest. VaMudisi and her husband were the exact opposite; they prayed for a good harvest expecting the ancestors or whoever it was they prayed to provide the good rains and the labour too.

After vaMudisi refused his offer of two heifers in payment for her medical skills my grandfather became suspicious of the traditional healer’s motives particularly when he had learnt already that her family was poor. My grandfather was fastidious about everything including being fair.

Everyone in the village knew about this old man who sold hoes and axes, for example, how one could force him to reduce his price to half or less for a quick sell especially when the old man was thirsty for beer. My grandfather made it a point of honour to pay the old man the full going price.

When my grandfather offer vaMudisi two heifers he knew that was more than a generous price to pay for her skills but he would have paid it and be done with it. These two or three visits from vaMudisi and her leaving with bags of grain each time went against the grain. He was fastidiously fair and would never cheat anyone and by the same token he did not like being short changed other.

My grandfather, for the sake of his wife – for I am sure my grandmother must have told him to bite his tongue countless times-, allowed vaMudisi to visit and leave loaded with grain for a number of years. He must have decided enough was enough.

It was said whenever my grandfather had something he wanted to say but for one reason or other could not say it; whatever those inhibitions were would disappear once he has had a stiff drink! He confronted vaMudisi after a day of heavy drinking.

Let us just say he told vaMudisi his piece of mind or as my mother put it “Chakatadzisa imbwe kuseka kunyemana ichigona!” VaMudisi left his home empty handed that time and never returned.

I later learnt that vaMudisi was not the traditional healer’s real name but a nickname short for mudisiwezvapasi (lover of the worldly things) given to her dirty habit of giving with one hand and make a big song and dance about it whilst taking with the other hand even more than she gave!

When you look at Zimbabwe today and compare it to where we were as a nation in 1980 few would doubt that we are worse off economically than then. Life expectancy, that all-encompassing qualitative and quantitative measure of a nation’s wellbeing, has plummeted from 68 years to a misery 34 years as of 2004 when the last data was available.

On the political front, unlike during white colonial rule, we now have a say in the governance of the country but that is true in theory only because the nation is yet to hold free, fair and credible elections.

There is no doubt that the nation’s liberation heroes and heroines who have ruled this nation for the last 34 years have undergone a metamorphosis after independence transforming them from heroes to mercenaries who, like vaMudisi, have taking away all the fruits of the nation’s hard work and leaving the rest impoverish economically and politically!

After 34 years of being rob blind by the very people who claim to be our liberators it is high time we told Mugabe and his cronies “Chakatadzisa imbwe kuseka kunyemana ichigona!” Tell Mugabe and his thugs; enough is enough, now fcuk off!

The answer is obvious, why do you ask! We must stop following anyone blindly like sheep and start thinking things through like humans. We are not sheep so why are we behaving like sheep?

If we had not followed Mugabe like sheep it would not have taken 15 years for the nation to finally see him for the corrupt and murderous tyrant he is.

If we had not followed and believed with no questions asked Tsvangirai's empty promise that the Copac constitution would deliver free and fair elections then we would have forced the implementation of the reforms.

People get the governments they deserve; we certainly deserved the tyrant and the village idiot. If we want a better Zimbabwe then we must start the search for competent leaders and stop electing the worst the nation has to offer. Kungo kuvirira zvose mavhu namarara!

Well he has cheated his fellow Zanu PF leaders and bamboozled Tsvangirai and MDC to stay in power. Now he has found his match; ZimAsset begging bowl! After a year of frantic begging, that empty begging bowl is now mocking him; it is doing his head in!

Yap, it is THE ECONOMY STUPID that is going to force Mugabe out of State house!

Karigan’ombe akazorigwa nendiro yokupemwa nayo!

Vakuru vakati chisingaperi chinoshura, Mugabe knows his days are numbered.

He is hanging on to the bitter end only because it is not in the nature of tyrants to give up power. The longer and harder he tries to hang on the more determined the people will be that he should go and their hatred will burn more fiercely.

If Mugabe had not rigged last year's elections the nation would have allowed him to stay in Blue Roof or take his billions out of the country. Now he is going to Chikurumbi or else be hunted down and killed like a rat as happened to Colonel Gaddafi.

Tyrants rule with an iron fist and one the get to the top of the hill they destroy route, burn all the climbing ropes and spend the rest of the time throwing stone, the kitchen sink, everything to stop anybody else reaching the top. When someone finally gets to the top the tyrant has no choice but to jump over the cliff with no parachute or crash-helmet.

Tyrants live in unparalleled luxuries whilst they remain in office but the day they are kicked out, it is a mess end for them! Mugabe’s end is near and it will not be a happy ending – that much is clear!

Mugabe grudging admit the nation is facing serious economic crisis but would not admit to being the root cause.

“We know that our people are going through a very difficult period and that there are no jobs,” he said, speaking to the Zanu PF Central Committee.

It was very long in coming but there it is; the tyrant is now admitting the country is facing serious economic meltdown. Two months ago he is the one who appointed a bus-load of dusted-up good-for-nothing Zanu PF loyalist including his nephew former Zvimba East legislator Patrick Zhuwawo; just to rescue them from the ravishing of unemployment and poverty.

Unemployment has soared to the nauseating heights of 90% plus.

The informal sector, kiya kiya, that had acted as a super sponge soaking up the unemployed cannot absorb any more. Kiya kiya people earn a meagre living from selling everything from cheap imported Chinese trinkets to the traditional oranges and tomatoes. Still kiya kiya people need a thriving formal sector because vendors do not sell to fellow vendors. So the decimation of Zimbabwe’s formal sector is now a double edged sword; it not only throws more people out of work but, worse still, many will become truly destitute enable to get the meagre kiya kiya earnings. This is the grim reality Mugabe wants the people to ignore and smile to impress his visiting SADC Head of State next week.

“However, we are asking you to smile and show the region that we are a hospitable peo-ple. That we can welcome visitors, let us all smile and for just a moment forget our prob-lems,” Mugabe said.
“At the end of the day, those who would have visited us must be able to say well they were met, that people were joyful, that people were friendly, that people were charitable and hospitable and who amongst themselves appeared to be united, all be it under the burden of sanctions.”

Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown is man-made and Mugabe is that man. 34 years of mismanagement, corruption and all-out looting in the last 15 years have destroyed the country’s once upon a time buoyant and prospering economy. All these years Mugabe has denied these problems and sort scapegoats or feeble excuses for the poor economic performance. The targeted sanctions was just one such excuse.

“The burden of sanctions” affected everyone else but not him and his cronies. Ranging from the high earning party loyalists like Cuthbert Dube, CEO of PSMAS, and his $ 500 000 a month to multi-millionaire ministers like Obert Mpofu and Ignatius Chombo right up to Mugabe himself with his $1 million birthday parties and $5 million wedding parties; they have all thrived not suffered under the sanctions burden! Why?

The people of Zimbabwe are sick and tired of being treated like primary school children and being told how to behave. The nation is facing a serious economic crisis and a way out must be found now. Mugabe has wasted a whole year begging to fill his ZimAsset begging bowl and failed to raise even a penny. The economic meltdown is getting worse and the people are suffering and he is doing nothing to end their suffering.

The people cannot be expected to smile on an empty stomach just to impress his visitors! Is it not bad enough that he has been lying to the nation about sanctions being the cause of the economic meltdown without insulting them by instructing them to grit their teeth and smile through all their suffering!

There is nothing more annoying that a pretentious F student criticising an A student for not getting an A+!

“In reality, there has been a lingering sense of disillusionment, anxiety and in some instances, outright disappointment in the hearts and minds of many African brothers and sisters,” wrote the pompous and breathtakingly incompetent MDC-T leader, Nelson Chamisa.

The just ended US-Africa summit has been a resounding success and has put US –Africa rela-tion on a new and exciting level. The summit has moved the relationship from the traditional do-nor-beggar to business and investment as shown by the $14 billion investment pledges announced during the summit. But better still, the Americans have shown they can do business in Africa without flooding the continent with cheap American goods and uphold their demands for justice and human rights and dignity for the continent’s down trodden.

The Americans have thrown a real challenge to the European Union whose knees have been shaking like jelly as some of the member pushed for re-engagement with tyrants like Mugabe regardless of his repeated failure to hold free and fair elections.

When it comes to countries like China and Russia, President Obama has thrown a real gauntlet! These countries have a history of exploiting Africa, of flooding her markets with cheap goods and of doing business with the continent’s worst tyrants. They are now under pressure to review their policies with Africa or they will be squeezed out!

Yes many African have high expectations when President Obama was elected and, until now, many thought he was not going to do anything for the continent. After the US – Africa summit he has passed with flying colours. It was a “late tackle” as Chamisa called it but an excellent tackle nonetheless!

One has to remember that President Obama was elected to lead America and tackle America’s problems and he faced a very serious economic problem caused by the financial meltdown of 2008. He has done well and hence his re-election for a second term by the American people. He has since turned on Africa and his legacy will last for generations!

What makes Nelson Chamisa’s criticism of President Obama so phony and annoying is that not only does he fail to see the important achievement of the US-Africa summit but that his own political record is so pathetic one has to ask he did not do better himself.

MDC was tasked to implement the democratic reforms necessary for free, fair and credible elections. They had five years to implement the reforms and failed to get even one reform implemented. SADC leaders warned the MDC leadership not to take part in the elections without the reforms and they paid no heed!

The only reason why no reforms were implemented is that MDC leaders are corrupt, they had their snouts in the feeding trough offered to them as a bribe by Mugabe and they had did not dare upset the tyrant with reforms. But worst of all that the leaders are breathtakingly incompetent; for only village idiots would not see that this was the get out of jail card for the nation. Mugabe would not have rigged the July 2013 elections if the reforms had been implemented!

Chamisa please shut the fcuk up; you cannot possibly see the speck in President Obama’s eye through that log in your own eye!

You or me are not in Harare was not the reason why none of the reforms were implemented and there is a mess in the country? I do not think so! There are millions of Zimbabweans besides you and me who are in Zimbabwe who should have implemented the reforms but did not.

Not even one reform was implemented because millions of Zimbabweans both inside and out-side country did not have the foggiest idea what they were about and many still do even today. A healthy and functional democracy demands an informed electorate; we do not have such an electorate. After 34 years of misrule, you would think the people have learnt; they are as ignorant and stupid as ever!

You and me can go back to Zimbabwe but the herd will still behave like a herd.

"If you allow other people to buy you and if you had voted because 'ndakapihwa mari nangana kuti ndivote nepapa, nemutowo uyu' and ukavhotawo nemutowo iwowo nekuti wapihwa mari, goodness me, you are rubbish!" said Mugabe.

"You are as, more also, just rubbish as the person who has given you the money; both of you, the giver and the given are alike."

That is rich coming from the man who was spent billions to rig last year's elections, paying the Israeli company, Nikov, alone as much as $ 13 million. In the end whatever Nikov did to corrupt the voters roll it work but it was rubbish because Mugabe has had to hide the voters roll for fear people will immediately see what happened.

The vote rigging was the start of Mugabe's problems which led straight into the economic one - no one could trust him to uphold the rule of law and end corruption. Rightly so too, no one trust a cheat!

So he thinks his Zanu PF Youth League leaders are rubbish but then so is he, rubbish!

Committed to the struggle for freedom or not many people have died. Life expectancy has dropped from 68 years to 34 years during Mugabe's rule so at least one of every two deaths in Zimbabwe today could have been avoided. The tyrant has gone on to murder 30 000 in his 34 years in power.

If the people had an sense then they would be standing and saying this waste of human lives is unacceptable. They have not done so and so it continues the real irony is that they are being careful and preserving their lives!

As for that village idiot Tsvangirai, he was not risking his life by implementing the reforms so why did he fail to get even one reform implemented?

@ Ruwa

We are facing this economic meltdown because Mugabe rigged last year's elections and we are not going to get out of this mess until we hold free and fair elections. The sooner Mugabe ac-cepts it the sooner this nation can move on.

The economic meltdown will one way or another force Mugabe to step down and we will have free and fair elections. It is happening already, the empty begging bowl is proof Mugabe is losing the economic struggle!

Of course no one expects simpletons like you Ruwa to understand how we got into this mess much less how to get out. You or Mugabe do not have to understand anything for change to happen.

IT IS THE ECONOMY STUPID!

The only threat to Mugabe and Zanu PF’s hold on power today is not PF Zapu, ZUM, MDC or anyone else out there but the economic meltdown symbolised by the ZimAsset begging bowl. The Border Gezi green bombers were good at intimidating the opposition and the people and forcing them to vote for Zanu PF. They can team up with the war vets and stage one of their njambanja pungwe to last for weeks or even months (Mugabe will supply the maize and meat to feed them) outside Western Embassies including the Chinese Embassy singing and drumming and demanding donations. The begging bowl will remain mockingly empty!

It is the economy that is threatening Zanu PF’s hold on power and the green bombers are flies that feed on human excrement what contribution can they possible make here!

Zimbabwe Light said...

@ Seka

Well if they can beat and rape the likes of Cuthbert Dube at PSMAS and Ministers Obert Mpofu and Ignatius Chombo and end all the high level corruption then they would have done the nation a great favour. But these green bombers are not smart enough to know corruption, they are after all flies that feed on human excrement; they are as stupid as the flies!

Rugare Gumbo, Zanu PF spokesman confirm over the weekend that the party was broke.

Of course Mugabe has known all along that the party was broke and has been scrounging around like everyone else. He is just using the incident as an excuse to outmanoeuvre and horse-whip his opponents!

"The Zanu PF leader however warned that there would be hell to pay for those responsible when the party holds its elective congress in December," said New Zimbabwe report. The report is spot on. Indeed the horse-whipping has already started and Grace's election next week will go like clock-work!

In a country that cannot even guarantee clean running water in all its major cities and towns, Ebola out break with mean hell! The measures this Mugabe regime has put in place to stop the spread of the virus are laughable!
